Quaterly Information 4/2008
The Investigation Division recommends the Danish Maritime Authority, possibly together
with
the educational institutions of the fishing industry and the Fishermen’s Occupational
Health Service,
• to prepare material of information about stability for those fishing vessels, which
are not covered by the obligation to carry a stability-booklet. Such information
could also include instructions to be alerted when sailing with the sea
• to look into the possibilities to carry out stability courses for skippers with a
older education.
GOTLAND CAROLINA / CONTI HARMONY –
Collision on 19 April 2008
Summary
GOTLAND CAROLINA sailed from Shuaiba, Kuwait, on 17 April at 1245 LT loaded with
about 40,500 MT Jet A1 bound for Avonmouth, UK.
CONTI HARMONY sailed from Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, on 18 April at 2030 LT
loaded with 1147 containers bound for Karachi, Pakistan.
On 19 April at 0926 LT (UTC + 3) the two vessels collided approximately 22 miles
south of Ra’s al Kuh, Iran, in fair weather, broad daylight and with a good visibility.
On the bridge of GOTLAND CAROLINA the 3 rd officer was officer on watch (OOW) and
alone. He observed CONTI HARMONY visually on his starboard side at a close range
and his port turn was too late to avoid the collision. The point of impact on GOTLAND
CAROLINA was the starboard quarter above the water line.
On the bridge of CONTI HARMONY the 3 rd officer was OOW and alone at the time of
the collision. He had the first observation of GOTLAND CAROLINA 3-4 points to port
and at a distance of approximately 8 miles about 30 minutes prior to the collision. He
expected GOTLAND CAROLINE to give way. In the last moment he executed a turn to
starboard. The point of impact on CONTI HARMONY was between frames 45 and 78
on the port side, well above the water line.
There were no injuries and no pollution caused by the collision, and both vessels sailed
to Fujairah for repairs.
