VIRGINIABORG transited the Kiel-canal in ballast on 27 September 2008 bound for
Oxelösund in Sweden. After Oxelösund next destination was the Great Lakes in the
U.S. When entering the lock in Brunsbüttel with pilot on board, the vessel hit the concrete
wall just outside the lock. This caused an indentation starboard side aft. While
alongside in the lock the damage was inspected by the master, the pilot and lock personnel.
The only damage visible was the indentation and no crack was observed. The
damage was situated just outside the no 6 starboard fuel oil tank. There was no damage
to the lock, and the master, pilot and the lock personnel all agreed that it was a
minor damage, wherefore no further reporting to shore authorities etc was needed.
Shortly after having passed the lock, during transit of the canal, the master informed
the vessels managing company. Based on the information that there was no crack, the
ship manager agreed that it was a minor damage which caused no immediate need for
further action.
The vessels class society was not informed.
