• Opklaringsenheden anbefaler Søfartsstyrelsen at se på muligheden for kurser i
The foundering of fishing vessel IDA on 1 December
2007
Summary
The 27½ foot fishing vessel IDA, that had passed through essential alterations and was
equipped with relatively heavy gear for trawling, was trawling for soles 10 – 12 nm
South-east of Grenaa.
The skipper was alone on board.
At approximately 0300 the skipper began sailing back to Grenaa, which he told his colleague
on board another fishing vessel in the same area.
The fishing vessel disappeared during the passage back to Grenaa, and neither the
skipper nor the vessel has been found.
Conclusions
The Investigation Division is of the opinion that the capsizing and foundering of IDA
was caused by coincidence of the following circumstances:
• Poor stability during larger lists caused by low freeboard and high centre of
gravity
• Reduction of stability due to water on deck when sailing with the sea
• Occasional resonance between ship and waves, which may have enlarged the
lists
• The use of autopilot has belated the reaction of the skipper against surfing
• The lack of survey and stability check-up after alterations of the vessel
• The lack of concrete knowledge by the skipper about the vessel’s stability
• Deteriorated steering characteristics of the vessel caused by inertness as consequence
of inappropriate weight distributions
Recommendation and initiatives
The Investigation Division recommends to the Danish Maritime Authority,
• to make it compulsory for ship yards and workshops to give notice of changes
of a vessel which may influence the stability of the vessel
• to announce on its homepage and via other channels about the obligation to notify
the Authority after major changes in order to have stability check-up.
