supervisor, <strong>in</strong> which they raise and answer questions,<br />
which are asked aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong>. This <strong>in</strong>terview<br />
can be read later on, s<strong>in</strong>ce it forms ma<strong>in</strong> part<br />
of the article at hand.<br />
The book and DVD provide <strong>in</strong>formation about the<br />
concepts and the processes <strong>in</strong> the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. At the<br />
same time, Patrick’s developement is shown <strong>in</strong> the<br />
film and described <strong>in</strong> the book. This shows how<br />
his abilities he supported and adapted, step by<br />
step, with the aid of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The MARTE MEO elements crucial to a successful<br />
communication are emphasised <strong>in</strong> the analysis of<br />
the recorded conversations of Patrick and his foster<br />
mother, his counsellor and, after complet<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, also with his foster sister, Iris.<br />
The analysis of the reviews are the ma<strong>in</strong> item for<br />
the counsellor’s work with Patrick, These checklists<br />
are based on those <strong>in</strong> the »MARTE MEO Manual«<br />
by Maria Aarts( 1 ). They can be found <strong>in</strong> the<br />
appendage of the new book.( 2 )<br />
The film sequences were also <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the<br />
book and can be read there. Recognisable elements<br />
of the MARTE MEO concept and elements taken<br />
from the MARTE MEO Review checklist applied by<br />
the counsellor are particularly po<strong>in</strong>ted out and<br />
described.<br />
The accompany<strong>in</strong>g supervision by Maria Aarts,<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g partly carried out as »Long Distance Super-<br />
Vision« (LDSV), is taken <strong>in</strong>to the documentation at<br />
certa<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />
Aim of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g: Support of development<br />
processes<br />
The emphasis of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is focuses only on<br />
the support of development processes. If there<br />
are needs <strong>in</strong> other areas, which is surely the case<br />
with Patrick, the development support required<br />
for that need can be supplemented for example<br />
by a therapeutic offer.<br />
The focus is also on the work with Patrick’s<br />
capabilities and abilities. At first little signs of<br />
beneficial behaviour are shown to Patrick with the<br />
additional <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> or<strong>der</strong> to make further<br />
development possible. These moments were<br />
shown <strong>in</strong> the video record<strong>in</strong>gs. This does not<br />
mean that the th<strong>in</strong>gs he has not yet developed<br />
are not looked at. But his deficits are so obvious<br />
that we know<strong>in</strong>gly concentrate on elaborat<strong>in</strong>g his<br />
strengths, these are recognized only with a second<br />
glance and with the aid of the MARTE MEO check-<br />
lists. Moreover, the orientation of capabilities is<br />
an essential part of the MARTE MEO method.<br />
<strong>Marte</strong> <strong>Meo</strong> with youths<br />
By publish<strong>in</strong>g the material, we want to show how<br />
especially young people can benefit from welldirected<br />
support us<strong>in</strong>g MARTE MEO. At presentations<br />
of the MARTE MEO method, <strong>in</strong> which films<br />
deal<strong>in</strong>g with the handl<strong>in</strong>g of babies and toddlers<br />
are used as basic (teach<strong>in</strong>g) films, the question is<br />
often asked, whether adolescents could be<br />
reached by MARTE MEO and (if yes), how this could<br />
be realised. Specialised personnel work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
youths who have special needs, hope to be<br />
<strong>in</strong>spired by the documentation to use MARTE MEO <strong>in</strong><br />
the support of teenagers.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>terview between Maria Aarts &<br />
Hildegard Rausch<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terview between Maria and<br />
Hildegard occurred on 19 January 2009 after complet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the work on the content of the book »Mir<br />
fällt nix e<strong>in</strong>« (»I am lost for Ideas«).( 3 ) Look<strong>in</strong>g<br />
back at the process, Maria Aarts and Hildegard<br />
Rausch exchange their op<strong>in</strong>ions regard<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
view on what contributed to the success of the<br />
communication tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. In do<strong>in</strong>g so, they respond<br />
to questions that are asked over and over aga<strong>in</strong><br />
when present<strong>in</strong>g the material.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>terview was <strong>in</strong>cluded as chapter 13 <strong>in</strong> the<br />
book »Mir fällt nix e<strong>in</strong>« (»I am lost for Ideas«) and<br />
can be seen as conclud<strong>in</strong>g film clip on the DVD<br />
enclosed. Chapter 13 is provided as a foretaste <strong>in</strong><br />
read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g pages.<br />

When we – Maria Aarts and Hildegard Rausch –<br />
could complete the work on the content on this<br />
book <strong>in</strong> January 2009, after hav<strong>in</strong>g revised the<br />
last chapters, we sat together at the coffee table<br />
<strong>in</strong> E<strong>in</strong>dhoven and both contemplated what it was<br />
that made this process with Patrick so effective.<br />
We asked ourselves to which extent the terms and<br />
conditions and the persons <strong>in</strong>volved, especially<br />
Patrick and his foster mother, contributed to this MARTE<br />
MEO Magaz<strong>in</strong>e 2009/1&2-VOL.42/43<br />
