It concludes with an interview between coach and
supervisor, in which they raise and answer questions,
which are asked again and again. This interview
can be read later on, since it forms main part
of the article at hand.
The book and DVD provide information about the
concepts and the processes in the training. At the
same time, Patrick’s developement is shown in the
film and described in the book. This shows how
his abilities he supported and adapted, step by
step, with the aid of the training.
The MARTE MEO elements crucial to a successful
communication are emphasised in the analysis of
the recorded conversations of Patrick and his foster
mother, his counsellor and, after completing the
training, also with his foster sister, Iris.
The analysis of the reviews are the main item for
the counsellor’s work with Patrick, These checklists
are based on those in the »MARTE MEO Manual«
by Maria Aarts( 1 ). They can be found in the
appendage of the new book.( 2 )
The film sequences were also included in the
book and can be read there. Recognisable elements
of the MARTE MEO concept and elements taken
from the MARTE MEO Review checklist applied by
the counsellor are particularly pointed out and
described.
The accompanying supervision by Maria Aarts,
being partly carried out as »Long Distance Super-
Vision« (LDSV), is taken into the documentation at
certain points.
Aim of the training: Support of development
processes
The emphasis of the training is focuses only on
the support of development processes. If there
are needs in other areas, which is surely the case
with Patrick, the development support required
for that need can be supplemented for example
by a therapeutic offer.
The focus is also on the work with Patrick’s
capabilities and abilities. At first little signs of
beneficial behaviour are shown to Patrick with the
additional information in order to make further
development possible. These moments were
shown in the video recordings. This does not
mean that the things he has not yet developed
are not looked at. But his deficits are so obvious
that we knowingly concentrate on elaborating his
strengths, these are recognized only with a second
glance and with the aid of the MARTE MEO check-
lists. Moreover, the orientation of capabilities is
an essential part of the MARTE MEO method.
Marte Meo with youths
By publishing the material, we want to show how
especially young people can benefit from welldirected
support using MARTE MEO. At presentations
of the MARTE MEO method, in which films
dealing with the handling of babies and toddlers
are used as basic (teaching) films, the question is
often asked, whether adolescents could be
reached by MARTE MEO and (if yes), how this could
be realised. Specialised personnel working with
youths who have special needs, hope to be
inspired by the documentation to use MARTE MEO in
the support of teenagers.
The interview between Maria Aarts &
Hildegard Rausch
The following interview between Maria and
Hildegard occurred on 19 January 2009 after completing
the work on the content of the book »Mir
fällt nix ein« (»I am lost for Ideas«).( 3 ) Looking
back at the process, Maria Aarts and Hildegard
Rausch exchange their opinions regarding their
view on what contributed to the success of the
communication training. In doing so, they respond
to questions that are asked over and over again
when presenting the material.
The interview was included as chapter 13 in the
book »Mir fällt nix ein« (»I am lost for Ideas«) and
can be seen as concluding film clip on the DVD
enclosed. Chapter 13 is provided as a foretaste in
reading in the following pages.
What made the

with Patrick so
successful?

When we – Maria Aarts and Hildegard Rausch –
could complete the work on the content on this
book in January 2009, after having revised the
last chapters, we sat together at the coffee table
in Eindhoven and both contemplated what it was
that made this process with Patrick so effective.
We asked ourselves to which extent the terms and
conditions and the persons involved, especially
Patrick and his foster mother, contributed to this MARTE
