Marte Meo in der Paarberatung

I was surprised at how the mother reacted. Instead
of only saying »Don’t hit him«, she showed the
child how it should behave and has thus recognised
its need, namely that it does not want to be
outrun. Very often, children get to hear many
things they are not allowed to do and not so very
much what they are allowed to do. Now, how
would it be to instead of always saying no: »Not
like that,« to show the child how it is supposed
to behave.
Examples:
If a child is jumping on the couch: »Look, there
are pillows«, or, if a child bites another: »Here you
have a ring; you can bite in that, but not your
brother,« or if a child wants to shake its aggressions
off: »Here you have a pillow; you can hit it,«
or at the table, when a child always rises and runs
away: »Remain seated until you’ve eaten everything
up.«
Setting boundaries means to show and tell the
child what it is allowed to do.

attendance«) has in the canton Freiburg
(Switzerland) the public contract to support
parents with children until the age of 7 in the
education, to sensitise them for educational
questions and to promote the exchange of
information. The offers include: courses for

2) In autumn 2008, Rita Jungo Küttel amongst
other things led an information meeting concerning
MARTE MEO at the University of Basel
and in this year at the Academy for Therapeutic
Pedagogy in Zürich. A basis course at the same
academy is announced for 2010. In the years
2008 and 2009, she gave basis and therapist
courses for instructors, therapists and early
counsellors in Central Switzerland. Within the
basic course at the University of Freiburg, Rita
Jungo Küttel showed a part of the DVD by
Maria Aarts and Gerald Hüther( 3 ); the students
were very impressed by the presentation and
have laughed a lot. So much humour at the
university is very good, says Rita.
