An Idea Is Born
A MARTE MEO training in Eindhoven provides
undreamed of possibilities. For us – Sabine Herrle,
Helga Meier-Warnke and Hildegard Rausch – it
resulted in a five day long stay in Riga (Latvia) in
January 2009.
The MARTE MEO Supervisor training was the beginning
of a friendly contact with Ilona Busa and
Gatis Buss from Latvia. To us German participants
it was really impressing that the two of them had
come all the way from Latvia in order to be
trained as »MARTE MEO Supervisors«. At the lunch
breaks, there were many joining moments of
contact and the idea to visit Ilona and Gatis in
Riga was mentioned and to combine this with a
professional contribution for the 2 nd MARTE MEO
Conference Latvia which they had planned and for
which Inge Nowak could be already won as keynote
speaker.
Agreements On Articles
The thought was fascinating and one we could
not let go. We stayed in touch via e-mail and contemplated
together with Ilona and Gatis which of
our experiences with MARTE MEO could be of interest
for the conference participants in Latvia. As a
result, the following programme was developed:
• Dealing with the topic »struggle against poverty«,
Inge Nowak was supposed to present the model
»Monheim for children«, a project that she had
developed as coordinator together with colleagues
on the basis of MARTE MEO. For the successful
realisation, the project has received several
awards, among other things the first German price
for prevention.( 1, 2, 3, 4 )
• Hildegard Rausch, who mainly works with foster
families as supervisor and systemic therapist in
a free practice, should give a speech on her
work with foster families and should especially
discuss the communication training with Patrick,
which began in this framework.( 5, 6 )
• Sabine Herrle, who had already trained several
colleagues from the stationary, day care, ambulant
and familial field of care as a manager of
the »centre of Ludwigshafen for individual child-
care and education«( 7 ), was due to focus on the
realisation of MARTE MEO in a big institution for
youth welfare.
• Helga Meier-Warnke, who acts as a freelance
supervisor and had recorded film material from
class situations, should show with her lecture,
how teachers can be introduced to MARTE MEO.
First Impressions Of Riga
On 21 January 2009 the day had arrived. Being
accompanied by our husbands, we curiously and
expectantly took off from the Frankfurt airport. It
was the first visit to Latvia for every member of
our little group. Beyond our expectations, Riga
presented itself as a modern metropolis. Besides
places steeped in history and wonderfully restored
buildings, expensive consumer goods and big cars
dominated the street scene as well. The gap
between rich and poor is quite big here as well
and the first impact of the financial crisis can be
recognised. According to our tourist guide, one
third of appropriate restored historic buildings are
vacant, because the rents are not affordable.
Despite the moist weather, the city captivates us.
We are on the way with Ilona and Gatis for hours
to ever new attractions and convivial stops in
cosy pubs.
The »2 nd Latvian Marte Meo Conference«
And then the highlight of our stay – the »2nd
Latvian MARTE MEO Conference«. One hundred participants
filled the meeting room of the conference
hotel »Elephant«, the overwhelming majority being
women, on enquiry to a high percentage self-paying
attendees. Ilze Salna, a candidate of the MARTE
MEO training and thus optimally familiar with the
contents, served as an impressive translator. The
hosts, Ilona Busa and Gatis Buss, welcomed the
participants and in a light and easy atmosphere
prepared them for the day. Inge Nowak, as licensed
supervisor with a lot of experience, started with
the basic information and laid the foundation for
the conference. By using video material from the
project »Mo.Ki«, she made comprehensible how
deprived children and their parents can be supported
by MARTE MEO.
