Partnership with the Church in West-Papua
There are two church districts within the Evangelical
Church of Westphalia, which are in partnership
with the Evangelical Church of West-Papua
/ Indonesia (GKI-TP): The church districts of
Schwelm and Hattingen-Witten. These partnerships
are existing for more than 20 years.
For many decades the indigenous peoples have
been denied their right of self-determination.
They increasingly turn to be a minority in their
own country and they are disadvantaged in
many areas as there is the social and economic
area as well as the field of education and health.
Again and again they have to suffer from severe
human rights violations. Overexploitation of the
tropical rain forest, for example for the large-scale
cultivation of palm oil, which is also supposed
to quench our thirst for energy, destroys the habitat
of many people – and contributes to climate
change.

The partnership with a church, living and working
in a surrounding of manifold difficulties and
threats, cannot take no account of these themes.
For this reason a foundation in the church district
of Schwelm called “Stiftung für Ausbildung in Papua”
(Foundation for Education in Papua) is established
which awards scholarships.
Time and again cases of human rights violations
are taken up and made public. The German partners
launch signature campaigns to give support
to the victims.
Regular (youth)-encounters are a highlight of the
partnership work.
Both church districts are members of the West-
Papua-Network which advocates on different levels
for the rights of Papua people.
