We had a very good impression, the project enabled many of the German
people to read about the Arab and Islamic world. We also talked
to Günter Meyer – I need to say that, too – in fairness to Dr. Günter
Meyer. We also produced a volume under his direction that was written
by 12 professors from German universities about the different
countries of the Arab world.
In 2004, during the Frankfurt Bookfair and beyond, we distributed
free of charge 75,000 copies of that book entitled The Arab World.
Again this enabled people to read and learn about the different countries.
And this was not historical in the sense of the 18th, 19th century,
but was the contemporary Arab world. It dealt with the state of
the Arab world at the time.
The project went very well, of course, and we sent copies of these
books to the various libraries in various universities and academic
centers in order to make it possible for everyone to have a chance to
read.
Well, in 2004 His Highness attended the Frankfurt Bookfair and
Dr. Olms gave His Highness a gift during that bookfair. And you can
guess what the gift was – it was an Asil Arabian horse! A grey stallion.
I don’t know if it shows behind me now [on the screen, the Ed.]
– yes, it does! And that was very much appreciated by His Highness,
because again it put into the forefront the common interest and the
friendship between Dr. Olms and His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan
al-Qasimi.
A few months later Dr. Olms was visiting Sharjah and we were passing
through the Museum of Arts in Sharjah, and there were a lot of
paintings. As we were walking His Highness pointed to a particular
painting and Dr. Olms was really looking at another painting. So His
Highness pointed at the painting and said: ”Look at this painting!”
