those momentous events in our ‘200 Years since the
Congress of Vienna’ campaign, we are emphasising
the symbiosis we offer between history and the
present-day,” says Alexandra Kaszay, new manager
of the Hofburg Vienna.
But it’s not just those deep historical roots that
make Vienna one of the world’s most important
convention cities today, with a convention tourism
sector generating well over 1.5 million overnight
stays a year: the capital’s diverse meetings infrastructure
offers participants in such events
everything they could possibly desire.
Medium-sized events for up to a few thousand
participants can be held against the impressive backdrop
of Ringstraße buildings, ranging from the
Naturhistorisches Museum and Kunsthistorisches
Museum through to the Nationalbibliothek and the
Albertina. Those who prefer their conventions on a
more intimate scale, but with a mix of the modern
and the historic, will find everything they’re looking
for at locations like the Künstlerhaus, at the
MuseumsQuartier’s unrivalled facilities, and – an
insider tip even the Viennese themselves are unaware
of – at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste.
Then, of course, there are numerous new faces on

Vienna’s booming hotel landscape, which includes
all the major forces in the international hotel sector,
such as Kempinski, Ritz-Carlton and Hilton, and too
many other great names to count. Palais Events, a

Finally, if you’re attending a convention and feel
like a walk through town and coffee, head for the
richly traditional Café Central, another part of the
Palais Events empire; it was here, 200 years ago, that
Metternich is said to have bamboozled his opposite
number Talleyrand while playing tarot, a fiendishly
complicated Viennese card game, while the two were
taking some welcome time out from the gruelling
negotiations of the Congress of Vienna. q
