Jewish milkman Tevje and his daughters – complemented<br />
this year by theatre, music and cabaret on<br />
the new, small stage – is being performed at the<br />
Seefestspiele Mörbisch (10 July to 23 August,<br />

stage at the Neusiedlersee. True to this year’s slogan<br />
‘Under Nature’s Spell’, the Styriarte festival (20 June<br />
to 21 July, styriarte.com), ably directed by star<br />
conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt as always, will be<br />
taking guests on musical journeys into the country<br />
in the company of Purcell, Mahler and others. With<br />
its trademark high quality and a range of stars to<br />
match, the Schubertiade at Hohenems (1 to 4 and 28<br />
to 31 May, 18 to 23 September) and Schwarzenberg<br />

will be devoting its energies to the theme of<br />
‘Schubert in France’. ‘1685’ – the year in which the<br />

has not one but two highly-regarded summer<br />
festivals to offer, in fact: Tanzsommer Innsbruck<br />
will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this summer<br />
with a ‘Long Day of Dance’, bringing together a vast<br />
array of international star ensembles. This year, that<br />
array will include the Dance Theatre of Harlem (27<br />
June to 12 July, tanzsommer.at). There’s no shortage<br />
of operettas and musicals to be found over the warm<br />
months: at OperettenSommer Kufstein (1 to<br />
16 August, operettensommer.com), the classic<br />
musical ‘My Fair Lady’ will be performed at the<br />
beautiful fortress arena, with a stageful of stars from<br />
Vienna’s Volksoper. The Sommerarena of Bühne<br />
Baden will be offering a packed programme as<br />
always (20 June to 5 September, buehnebaden.at,<br />
including a 25% reduction on tickets to evening<br />
events with your Austrian boarding pass!); as well as<br />
Ödön von Horváth’s ‘Tales from the Vienna Wood’,<br />
the repertoire will once again include two operettas,<br />
Lehár’s ‘Giuditta’ and Kálmán’s ‘The Circus<br />
Princess’. As well as all this, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s<br />
classic musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ will be<br />
performed once again, in August.<br />
