reef, widely viewed as a divers’ paradise by scuba and
snorkelling fans around the world, and Cozumel, in
Mexico, with its mysterious subterranean river system
and holy Mayan cult site.
You can also make the journey across the Atlantic
direct from Europe, of course: just take the cruise ship
Mein Schiff, of the TuiCruises fleet, which casts off
from Majorca on 23 October on a journey to the
Dominican Republic lasting 15 wonderful days and
taking visitors to such dreamy locations as
Lanzarote, the Cape Verde islands, Dominica,
Antigua and Tortola. Another liner, the AIDAluna,
departs from New York to the Caribbean in October,
where it will cruise until March 2015. The company
has another two vessels, the AIDAvita and
AIDAbella, out at sea between Miami, Jamaica,
St. Lucia and Mexico.
It’s not just ocean giants belonging to the
industry’s major players that love to cruise the
Caribbean; it’s also the favourite amongst the
shipping companies which have positioned themselves
at the luxury end of the market by offering a
product offering smaller ships, more crew members per
passenger, high-quality teak finishing, bathrobes with
stitched initials, and much more besides. With her 112
passengers very nearly outnumbered by 95 crew, for
example, the SeaDream could almost be a private
yacht, cruising a range of different routes in amongst
the islands of the Lesser Antilles. Such showbiz
luminaries as Jane Fonda and Cliff Richard are said to
have sunned themselves on the SeaDream’s beautiful
teak deck over the years. But then, at a list price of up
to 5,500 euros a week, the luxury variant of the cruise
is not cheap.
Another region offering exotica and heat in equal
measure, and currently being opened up more and
more by the cruise liners, is the eastern Indian Ocean
and South China Sea, where some of the most
familiar-sounding destinations include Phuket,
Java, Bali and Da Nang. MSC Kreuzfahrten, for
instance, is travelling this corner of the world for the
first time in early 2015, with its ‘Grand Voyage’ from
Dubai to Australia. During this grand 33-day
voyage, passengers will have the chance to stock up
on their curry mixes at Mumbai’s Lalbagh spice
market, bathe in the crystal-clear waters surround-
ing the Langkawi Islands, and admire more than
20,000 orchids kept in Singapore’s Botanical
Gardens. The Costa Victoria cruises from Shanghai to
Singapore, via Hong Kong and Vietnam, in late
October. There’s certainly no lack of fine sandy
beaches, exuberant marketplaces, temples, pagodas
and ancient colonial towns to meet all your exotic
desires on the ten-day cruise.
Possibly more exotic still – due in the main to the
fact that, viewed through our northern eyes, they are
on the opposite side of the world – are the South
Seas. Anyone not packing their cases and heading
straight for the airport when hearing such names as
Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa and others should consider
urgently seeking treatment for a lack of wanderlust.
And in February 2015, passengers will have the
chance to join the MS Deutschland on its journey
from Papeete on Tahiti to Auckland – after which it
will head around the world in late summer. The
two-week cruise on the much-loved cruise liner,
known to so many of us as the current location of the
well-known ZDF series ‘Traumschiff’ – will stop off
at locations including Bora Bora and the Fiji Islands
along the way. After sailing the South Seas, New
Zealand and Australia, the high-class luxury liner
will then slowly make its way back to its final
destination, Venice, via Bali, Java and Singapore.
Guests are also served a large helping of exotic
experiences on board the MS Europa, including
snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef, exploring the
hidden dreamy beaches of the Salomon Islands by
dinghy, and cruising past the rumbling volcano on
the misty nearby island of Manam. The cruise on the
elegant ‘five-star-plus’ flagship of the Hapag-Lloyd
shipping line takes guests from Sydney to Manila via
Papua New Guinea in January 2015.
The shipping companies are constantly expanding
their exotic destinations, just as cruises, too, are
still booming in general: last year, no fewer than 2
million of our German neighbours travelled the
world’s seas aboard a cruise liner. So this year, join in
with the trend for the exotic deluxe, discover
once-unknown waters and quench your thirst for
tropical magic by taking a dignified cruise – so
ensuring you come through the rest of the winter
months happy and relaxed.
