The Unknown
Minsk ist vermutlich die große
Unbekannte unter den europäischen
Hauptstädten. Dabei ist das eine
recht bemerkenswerte Stadt.
Nachdem sie im Zweiten Weltkrieg
nahezu vollständig zerstört worde
war, wurde sie nach Kriegsende sehr
flott im unverkennbaren Stil der
Sowjetunion neu aufgebaut: breite,
sechs- bis achtspurige Boulevards,
Schachbrettmuster, repräsentative
Bauten. Nirgendwo anders hat sich
dieser Stil so gut erhalten wie in der
Hauptstadt Weißrusslands.

Minsk is probably the ‘Great Unknown’
amongst European capitals. In truth,
however, it is a remarkable city: after
being almost completely destroyed in the
Second World War, it was rapidly rebuilt
in inimitable Soviet style when the war
ended, with wide, six- to eight-lane
boulevards, in a grid pattern, and with
representative buildings. Nowhere else
has this style been maintained in quite
the same way as in the capital of Belarus.

Das Hotel: Grand Hotel Continental. Vor
einigen Jahren wurde das alte Grand Hotel im
Stadtzentrum runderneuert wiedereröffnet;
nun vereint es die Opulenz des 19. Jahrhunderts
mit den technologischen Errungenschaften
von heute (continentalhotels.ro).
Der Palast: Parlamentspalast. Einst hieß
dieses Monster von einem Gebäude „Haus
des Volkes”. Heute ist es Sitz des Parlaments.
Der Park: Cişmigiu Park. Der ideale Ort zum
Entspannen: ein schön gestalteter Park im
Stadtzentrum mit einem Teich in der Mitte.
Die Besichtigungstour: Lipscani. Das
Altstadtviertel Lipscani ist das geistige und
geografische Herz der Stadt. Man flaniert
durch die engen Gassen und meint, die Zeit
wäre stehen geblieben.
Das Museum: Muzeul al Satului. Ein
sorgfältig arrangiertes Freiluftmuseum, das
die ländliche Lebensweise und Kultur
dokumentiert (muzeul-satului.ro).
Der Ausflug: Rundfahrt zu den Schlössern

The hotel: the Grand Hotel Continental. A few
years ago, the old Grand Hotel in the city centre
was renovated from top to bottom; now it
combines the opulence of the nineteenth century
with the technological achievements of today

The palace: Palace of the Parliament. This
monster of a building was once known as the
‘House of the People’. Today it is the seat of the
country’s Parliament.
The park: Cişmigiu Park. The perfect place to
relax, a beautifully laid-out park at the heart of the
city, centred around a lake.
The guided tour: Lipscani. The old city quarter of
Lipscani is the spiritual and geographical heart of
the city. Stroll through its narrow alleyways: you’ll
think time has stood still.
The museum: The Village Museum (Muzeul al
Satului). This carefully arranged open-air museum
documents rural lifestyle and culture (muzeulsatului.ro).
The excursion: a round trip of the castles of
Transylvania. Book a daytrip to get an impression

Past and future
Die meisten Besucher kommen nach Krakau, um in die Vergangenheit zu blicken.
Kazimierz, das ehemalige jüdische Viertel, gilt als Hauptattraktion. Krakau hat aber auch
ein bemerkenswertes Museum zeitgenössischer Kunst: das MOCAK, das Museum of
Contemporary Art Krakow (mocak.pl). Es ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert. Und von
der Vergangenheit ist es gar nicht so weit entfernt. Gleich nebenan befindet sich die
legendäre Fabrik Oskar Schindlers, jenes Mannes mit der Liste, dem Steven Spielberg
einen eindrucksvollen Film gewidmet hat.

Most visitors to Krakow come to take a look into the past, with Kazimierz, the former Jewish
quarter, the main attraction. But the city also has the remarkable Museum of Contemporary

past is never far away: The MOCAK is located directly next to the legendary factory of Oskar
