Sehr geehrte Fluggäste,
Dear Passengers,
immer wieder bekomme ich die Frage gestellt: Was haben
Passagiere eigentlich von Airline Bündnissen und Allianzen?
Meine Antwort darauf: sehr viel. Und ich habe ein aktuelles
Beispiel für Sie: Wenn Sie etwa von St. Petersburg – die
Destination der Coverstory in dieser Ausgabe – nach Addis
Abeba fliegen wollen und dabei ein unkompliziertes
Reiseerlebnis genießen möchten, können Sie das demnächst
tun: Möglich macht das eine enge Zusammenarbeit
mit unserem Partner Ethiopian Airlines. So fliegen Sie mit
Austrian aus der Metropole an der Newa künftig über Wien
bequem mit der „African Airline of the Year“ weiter auf den
afrikanischen Kontinent. Und genießen volles Service, volle
Meilen und eine nahtlose Reise. Das bedeutet für mich
Kundennutzen in der Allianz. Natürlich funktioniert dieses
Konzept auch bei Flügen aus Afrika in das Austrian Airlines
Streckennetz. Übrigens haben Wien und Addis Abeba, die
Drehscheibe von Ethiopian Airlines, neben der Kaffeekultur
noch etwas anderes gemeinsam: Beide Städte genießen
einen großen Stellenwert im Kongresstourismus.
Ein weiterer neuer Partner, den wir in Kürze in Wien
begrüßen werden, ist Air China. Gemeinsam mit dem
führenden chinesischen Carrier können wir Ihnen ein
deutlich erweitertes Angebot mit noch mehr Verbindungen
von und nach Beijing anbieten: Insgesamt neunmal
wöchentlich heben die Flugzeuge von Austrian Airlines und
Air China von und nach Wien bzw. Beijing ab. Die Flugpläne
sind so abgestimmt, dass Sie Anschlussflüge über Wien zu
vielen Destinationen im Austrian Streckennetz bequem
erreichen. Der Vienna International Airport ist nicht nur die
Drehscheibe zwischen Westen und Osten, er ist auch
Europas schnellster Transferairport mit einer Minimum-
Umsteigezeit von rund einer halben Stunde.
Mit Air China und Ethiopian Airlines sind zwei renommierte
Airlines im Anflug auf Wien. Beide sind Mitglieder in
der Star Alliance, dem weltweit größten Airline Verbund. Als
ehemaliger CEO dieser Allianz freut es mich umso mehr,
dass es uns gemeinsam mit dem Flughafen Wien gelungen
ist, die Zusammenarbeit mit diesen beiden Partnern zu
vertiefen. Ich hoffe, Sie werden bald Gelegenheit haben,
dieses erweiterte Angebot zu nutzen und zu genießen.

Again and again, I am asked the question: what do passengers
actually get out of airline alliances? My answer is always the same: a
great deal. Here’s just one, topical, example of how well alliances can
and do work. Let us imagine you wanted to fly from St. Petersburg –
the destination on the cover of this issue – to Addis Ababa, and enjoy
an uncomplicated travel experience while doing so. Very soon you will
be able to do exactly that, thanks to a new collaboration with our
partner Ethiopian Airlines which will make it possible. In future,
thanks to that new collaboration, you will be able to fly Austrian from
the city on the River Neva, transfer effortlessly in Vienna, then
continue south into Africa with the ‘African Airline of the Year’. And
all the way along that route, you will benefit from unmatched levels of
service, the maximum possible air miles, and a seamless journey. For
me, that means customers benefit tangibly from our membership of an
alliance. This also works in the other direction, of course, for passengers
travelling from Africa and wishing to plug into the Austrian
Airlines route network. Vienna and Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian
Airlines hub, have a great deal more in common than just the coffee
culture, by the way: both cities are major international players in
conference tourism.
Another new partner we shall soon be welcoming to Vienna is Air
China. Working together with the leading Chinese carrier will enable
us to offer you a significantly improved product, with even more
connections to and from Beijing, as the aircraft of Austrian Airlines
and Air China begin taking off in the direction of Vienna and Beijing
nine times each week. The flight schedules will be harmonised in such
a way that passengers will be able to transfer comfortably at the
Vienna hub and travel on to a wide range of destinations in Austrian’s
global route network. Vienna International Airport is not just the
perfect hub for passengers travelling between east and west, of course;
it is also Europe’s fastest transfer airport, with a minimum connecting
time of around half-an-hour.
In Air China and Ethiopian Airlines, then, we will very soon have
two more widely-respected airlines flying into Vienna. Both are
members of the Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance. As
the former CEO of this alliance, I am all the more pleased that,
together with Vienna Airport, we have succeeded in deepening our
collaboration with both these partners. I hope you will soon have an
opportunity to use and enjoy this newly-expanded product personally.
