Use of a meal replacement weight loss intervention in survivors
of ER/PR negative breast cancer
Large-scale prospective studies that have evaluated the longer term effects
of obesity have noted that being obese increases one’s risk of developing
cancer. One study reported that body size (weight or Body Mass Index) was
associated with all breast cancer recurrence and was found to be more pronounced
for women with estrogen and progesterone receptor negative (ER/
PR-) tumors. Treatment of obesity by weight loss through changes in diet
and physical activity has been reported to beneficially impact blood markers
associated with increased breast cancer risk. Since overweight is a risk factor
for recurrence and death from breast cancer and studies in survivors indicate
that extra weight gained during treatment has been noted to negatively impact
body image, a pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility
of recruiting survivors of breast cancer (ER/PR-) to participate in a meal
replacement (Almased ® ) weight loss intervention. The study assessed the
participant’s ability to adhere to the intervention protocol and to measure
changes in health-related quality of life and body weight. Nineteen women
(median age 59 years; 14 white, 5 black) participated in this 3 month study.
Significant improvements in body weight were noted, only one participant
failed to lose weight by the end of the study, and the mean weight change
was -13.8 ± 8.0 pounds (p
