18NOTES ON THE INDIVIDUAL RECORDINGSThe commentary concerning the individualrecordings was prepared by Kurt Reinhard.Interpolations by the Editor have beenplaced in brackets. Following disc, side,and band number, the following informationis presented in the order given:a) Number of the cylinder in the DemonstrationCollection.b) Name of the collector and of the collectionfrom which the Demonstration Collectionrecording was selected; the numberof the cylinder in that collection.c) In parentheses: Total number of cylindersin the collection under question, the datethe recording was made, and the place ofrecording when known.d) Other data and commentary.The use of" Archive" rather than thename of a collector indicates that the recordingin question was made in the Phonogramm-Archivor by members of the staffof the Archive in Berlin.The last paragraph in the notes for eachrecording represents work notes made bythe research assistant in the Archives ofFolk and Primitive Music in preparing themaster tapes from which the discs have beenpressed. Additions to these notes by theEditor have been placed in brackets. Thefollowing is a key to the markings used inthe work notes:C-c/C-t - Master tape strip prepared fromthe cylinder or from tape copy of thecylinder of the Cowell set.H-c/H-d - Master tape strip prepared fromcylinder or from disc copy of the cylinderof the Herzog set.FB/FT - Setting of bass or treble soundeffect cut off filter, in cps.EB/ET - Setting of bass or treble equalizerin Scott 121C preamplifier, in plus orminus decibels.Surface noise - Extraneous noise producedby friction of stylus on cylinder surface.Beats - Recurrent extraneous sounds producedby up and down movement ofstylus upon out of round cylinder.Wobble - A tremolo-like effect producedby poorly cut grooves.Overmodulation - Distortion of the signalproduced by recording the signal at ahigher level tp,an the diaphragm attachedto the recording stylus could accommodate.Fade-in/Fade-out - The slow increase ofthe amplitude of the signal from belowthe threshold of hearing to full recordinglevel. / The reverse procedure.Band .!: Cylinder l.
