ECOLEAD is an Integrated Project
co-funded by the European Commission
within 6th Framework Programme
(2002-2006). Commencing in April 2004,
ECOLEAD is a 4-year project involving 20
partners from 14 countries across Europe.
Vision: „In ten years, in response to
fast changing market conditions, most
enterprises and specially the SMEs will be
part of some sustainable collaborative
networks that will act as breeding environments
for the formation of dynamic virtual
organizations in response to fast changing
market conditions ...“
Objectives: ECOLEAD aims to create
strong foundations and mechanisms
needed to establish the most advanced
collaborative and network-based industrial
society in Europe.
The fundamental assumption in ECO-
LEAD is that a substantial impact in materializing
networked collaborative business
ecosystems requires a holistic approach.
The complexity of this research-field and
the various inter-dependencies among
the involved business entities, social
actors, and technologies, substantial
breakthroughs cannot be achieved with
incremental innovation in isolated areas.
On the other hand, project plans must
remain manageable. Thus ECOLEAD
addresses the most fundamental and
inter-related focus areas, which form
the basis for dynamic and sustainable
networked organizations: the VO Breeding
Environments, Dynamic Virtual Organizations
and Professional Virtual Communities.
In addition to these three vertical
focus areas, the holistic approach is reinforced
and sustained on two horizontal
areas: the theoretical foundation for
collaborative networks and the horizontal
ICT infrastructure. The horizontal activities
support and affect all three vertical
focus areas. The theoretical foundation
shall provide the basis for technologyindependent
understanding of the area
and its phenomena. The existence of an
invisible, low-cost ICT infrastructure is a
pre-condition for the establishment of truly
dynamic collaborative networks. ECOLE-
AD is expected to impact industrial competitiveness
and societal mechanisms,
by providing means to effectively exploit
opportunities deriving from the deployment
of VOs, and by implementing new
professional work paradigms, capable of
enacting the knowledge-based society
throughout Europe.
Research focus of BIBA: BIBA is represented
by the IKAP division in the project.
Its main interest is in the field of theoretical
foundation of collaborative networks
as well as in management mechanisms
for VO and VBE.
Preliminary results:
Basic understanding of the topologies
• and mechanisms of the three considered
types of networks has been achieved.
Identification and classification of
• scientific models suitable for describing
collaborative networks.
Development of a requirement ca-
• talogue and specifications of a VBE-management
system.
Definition requirements and specifi-
• cations of a Performance Measurement
System for VO.
Engagement of 11 existing networks
• as demonstrators and multipliers of the
ECOLEAD results.
