„Früher konnte ich keine Katze haben wegen<br />
Allergien in der Familie <strong>und</strong> tierfeindlichen<br />
Vermietern.“ In den japanischen Mikroapartments<br />
Tiere zu halten, ist ohnehin schwer<br />
vorstellbar. Tiercafés sind also in erster Linie eine<br />
pragmatische Reaktion auf die Wohnverhältnisse.<br />
Wer sich nach dem weichen Fell einer Perserkatze<br />
sehnt, kann ein Café besuchen, statt in ein<br />
größeres Haus zu ziehen <strong>und</strong> sich selbst um<br />
Fütterung <strong>und</strong> Katzenhaare kümmern zu müssen.<br />
„Oft kommen Besucher, um viele unterschiedliche<br />
Katzen zu sehen“, sagt Itoh. Eine Munchkin,<br />
eine Singapura, eine Ocicat: Sie alle wohnen im<br />
Café. „Und jede ist super süß“, fügt sie hinzu. Ein<br />
Pärchen aus Taiwan hat einen Katzensnack<br />
gekauft. Damit sind sie sofort bei den Katzen<br />
beliebt, die sich hinauf in Richtung Schälchen<br />
strecken. Zwei Schülerinnen necken ein Kätzchen<br />
mit Spielzeug, das vom Café angeboten wird. Ein<br />
älterer Mann sitzt auf einem Hocker <strong>und</strong> beobachtet<br />
einfach. „Viele gewinnen die Katzen hier so lieb,<br />
dass sie dann doch eine eigene wollen“, erzählt<br />
Itoh, der es auch so ging. Auf ihrem Smartphone<br />
klickt sie stolz durch die Bilder ihres Kätzchens.<br />
Bisher gibt es allein in Tokio sieben Zweigstellen<br />
dieses Designer-Katzencafés. Jeden Tag ab<br />
zehn Uhr morgens stehen die Leute an. Die<br />
meisten Besucher in dieser Filiale, die direkt<br />
neben Sehenswürdigkeiten liegt, sind Touristen<br />
aus dem In- <strong>und</strong> Ausland. Itoh drückt es, typisch<br />
japanisch, sehr diplomatisch aus: „Das ist schön,<br />
aber ein paar mehr Einheimische wären noch<br />
schöner.“ Oft gebe es Sprachbarrieren zwischen<br />
Angestellten <strong>und</strong> Besuchern. Neben Englisch<br />
müssten die eigentlich auch Chinesisch <strong>und</strong><br />
Koreanisch sprechen. Aber dass Katzen süß sind,<br />
verstehe eigentlich jeder.<br />

an Ocicat all live in the cafe. “Each of them is<br />
super-sweet,” says Itoh. A couple from Taiwan<br />
have bought a snack for the creatures who are<br />
eagerly stretching their paws towards it. Two<br />
schoolgirls are teasing a kitten with a toy supplied<br />
by the cafe. An elderly man is simply sitting on a<br />
barstool and watching. “Lots of people become so<br />
fond of the cats here that they want their own,”<br />
says Itoh. That’s what happened to her. She<br />
proudly shows smartphone pictures of her kitten.<br />
So far, there are seven branches of this<br />
designer-cat cafe chain in Tokyo alone. People<br />
queue up from 10am every day. At this particular<br />
branch, right next to Tokyo’s sites, the visitors are<br />
mainly tourists from Japan and occasionally<br />
overseas. In typically diplomatic Japanese<br />
fashion, Itoh says, “That’s nice, but a few more<br />
locals would be even nicer.” She says there are<br />
often language barriers between the staff and the<br />
visitors. Besides English, employees would ideally<br />
speak Chinese and Korean as well. On the other<br />
hand, the only important thing anybody needs to<br />
<strong>und</strong>erstand is how sweet cats are.<br />
