Dr.-Ing. Georg Menges, den früheren Leiter des Instituts für Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV) in Industrie und Handwerk an der RWTH Aachen, in der festlichen Akademischen Feier am 18. März <strong>2016</strong> in <strong>Leoben</strong> mit der Ehrendoktorwürde aus. Professor Menges, der in Fachkreisen der <strong>Kunststofftechnik</strong> als einer der großen europäischen Pioniere der Kunststoffverarbeitung gilt, wurde 1965 auf den Lehrstuhl für Kunststoffverarbeitung an die Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule RWTH Aachen berufen und leitete das im Jahr 1950 gegründete Institut für 22 Jahre bis Dezember 1987. Seine Beziehungen zur Montanuniversität <strong>Leoben</strong> er entwickelte er bereits im Jahre 1968: Neben dem Auslandsösterreicher Professor Hermann F. Mark, dem Begründer der nordamerikanischen Polymerwissenschaften, war Professor Georg Menges in den Jahren 1968 und 1969 der zweite ranghohe internationale Berater des Professorenkollegiums der damaligen „Montanistischen Hochschule <strong>Leoben</strong>“ und grundlegend an den Vorbereitungen und dem Aufbau der Studienrichtung <strong>Kunststofftechnik</strong> beteiligt. Professor Menges förderte in vielfältiger Weise die junge Studienrichtung in <strong>Leoben</strong>, nicht nur während der Aufbauphase, sondern auch durch kontinuierlichen Wissensaustausch über Gastvortragende und durch gegenseitige Tagungsbesuche. Für seine wissenschaftlichen Leistungen wurden Professor Menges zahlreiche Ehrungen namhafter Verbände und Institutionen im In- und Ausland (Australien, China, Großbritannien, Japan, Österreich, USA) verliehen. Als einer der ersten Nicht-US-Amerikaner wurde er 2006 für sein Lebenswerk in die 1972 gegründete Plastics Hall of Fame aufgenommen, was als die höchste Auszeichnung gilt, die in der Kunststoffindustrie vergeben wird. 1985 wurde Professor Menges in Wien mit der höchsten polymerwissenschaftlichen Auszeichnung Österreichs, der „H.F. Mark-Medaille“ für seine wissenschaftlichen Leistungen im Bereich der Kunststoffverarbeitung ausgezeichnet. The Montanuniversitaet of <strong>Leoben</strong> awarded Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Georg Menges the honorary doctorate at the academic ceremony on March the 18 th <strong>2016</strong>. Professor Menges was the former head of the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) in Industry and Crafts at the RWTH Aachen. Professor Menges, who is regarded as one of the great European pioneers of plastics processing, was appointed to the chair for plastics processing at the RWTH Aachen in 1965 and headed the institute, which was founded in 1950, for 22 years until December 1987. At the beginning of 1968 he developed his relations to the Montanuniversitaet <strong>Leoben</strong>: In Addition to Professor Hermann F. Mark, founder of the North American Polymer Sciences, Professor Menges was the second high-ranking international consultant to the professors‘ councils at the „Montanistischen Hochschule <strong>Leoben</strong>“ in the years of 1968 and 1969. He was involved in the preparations and the establishment of the new study program Polymer Engineering and Science. Professor Menges promoted the young field of study in <strong>Leoben</strong> in many ways, not only during the development phase, but also through a continuous exchange of knowledge through guest lecturers and mutual meetings. For his scientific achievements, Professor Menges was awarded numerous honors by well-known associations and institutions in Germany and abroad (Australia, China, Great Britain, Japan, Austria, USA). As one of the first non-US-Americans, he was admitted to the Plastics Hall of Fame, founded in 1972, known as the highest award given in the plastics industry. In 1985 Professor Menges was awarded the highest polymer science award in Austria, the „H.F. Mark-Medal“ for his scientific achievements in the field of plastic processing. 69
