STRAW BALE VAULT
This extension to the "virtual construction site" in Ravelsbach consists of two
structures: a post and beam construction (2), which stands on point foundations
and supports the pent roof, and a CUT construction on strip foundations and foam
glass gravel in between (4), which supports the organically shaped straw bale half
vault (1). The three rooms thus created will serve as additional bedrooms for
STEPpers, the room in front of the rear exit will become a cloakroom. The vaults
will have openings which will be illuminated through glass bottles (12) and patio
doors (6). The interior is roughly plastered with cob from an excavation nearby
(13) and finely plastered with clay from Sand & Lehm Zöchbauer. For the plaster
on the outside, we decide - together with the lime plasterer Michael Fischer
(BiWeNa) - on Pajalith 73 from Gräfix, a lime plaster specially developed for straw
bale walls (8-11). The wonderful thing about this light lime plaster is that a first
rough plaster layer of about 2cm can already be applied as spray plaster. All work
on this vault is carried out in 2020 with the STEPpers (7) and the trainers Herbert
(5), Karsten, Peter (3), Michael (9), Lisandro, Paul and Toni (Lehmkunst). The
completion is scheduled for next year as part of the STEP course 2021.
