20 years of straw bale construction in Austria are a reason for us at
asbn to celebrate - and this 160-page anniversary magazine, packed
with straw bale information, photos, reminiscences and future
perspectives, is our contribution to this festive occasion.
20 years of straw bale construction, and just as many years of asbn,
are also a reason to look back on many successes, innovations and
successful projects, new friendships plus one constant: change.
Sometimes the years were easy, sometimes they were hard, but the
joy was always there.
It was a path of reason and of the heart in times of climate change,
a path of community in times of selfie loneliness, a path of reducing
the complexity of building and of strengthening participation – the
keyword, participation, in building site workshops.
Then came 2020. Our STEP course was more than well booked, we
could - had to - expand and enlarge - and then within a very short
time switch everything over to online training. Construction sites
were cancelled or postponed; the tense financial situation
everywhere made no exception for us. But the year also made many
things possible that were previously considered unthinkable.
Changes were accelerated and and confidence strengthened:
together we must, can and will achieve a lot.
The emphasis here is on "together". For we can only meet a global
challenge like climate protection together and cooperatively. The old
maxim "think global, act local" has never changed: Every straw bale
house built, every square metre of nature preserved can only be
realised locally - and is of benefit to the whole planet. "Straw is
nature" we all know that.

20 Jahre Strohballenbau in Österreich sind für uns vom asbn ein Grund
zum Feiern – und dieses mit Strohballen-Infos, -Fotos, -Reminiszenzen
und -Zukunftsperspektiven prall gefüllte, 160 Seiten Jubiläumsmagazin
ist unser Beitrag zu diesem festlichen Anlass.
20 Jahre Strohballenbau und ebenso viele Jahre asbn sind aber auch ein
Grund zurückzublicken. Auf viele Erfolge, Innovationen und gelungene
Projekte. Auf neue Freundschaften. Und eine Konstante: Veränderung.
Es waren mal leichtere, mal schwerere Jahre. Die Freude war immer
dabei. Es war ein Weg der Vernunft und des Herzens in Zeiten des
Klimawandels, ein Weg der Gemeinschaft in Zeiten der Selfie-
Vereinsamung, ein Weg der Reduktion der Komplexität des Bauens und
der Partizipation in Baustellen-Workshops.
Dann kam 2020. Unser STEP-Kurs war mehr als gut gebucht, wir konnten
– mussten – ausbauen und vergrößern – um dann binnen kürzester Zeit
alles auf Online-Trainings umzustellen. Baustellen wurden abgesagt oder
verschoben, die überall angespannte finanzielle Lage machte für uns
keine Ausnahme. Aber das Jahr hat auch vieles möglich gemacht, was
vorher als undenkbar galt. Veränderungen beschleunigt. Und das
Vertrauen gestärkt: Wir müssen, können und werden gemeinsam noch
viel erreichen.
Die Betonung liegt dabei auf „gemeinsam“. Denn einer globalen
Herausforderung wie dem Klimaschutz können wir nur gemeinsam und
kooperativ begegnen. Dabei hat sich an der alten Maxime „think global,
act local“ nie etwas geändert: Jeder Strohballenbau, jeder bewahrte
Quadratmeter Natur kann nur lokal verwirklicht werden – und ist ein
Gewinn für den ganzen Planeten.
Wir brauchen dafür Eure Unterstützung mehr denn je. Arbeitet mit, in der
Organisation, für Übersetzungen, nehmt an Kursen und Workshops teil,
inseriert in Publikationen (ein herzliches Dankeschön an alle, die das in
diesem Magazin getan haben) … und: Werdet Mitglied beim asbn! Helft
uns mit Eurem Mitgliedsbeitrag und genießt handfeste Vorteile (siehe
