Zwangsmischer/compulsory mixer
If you insulate with straw, you also
plaster with clay or use clay boards in
dry construction, anything else (gypsumboards,
5mm fine clay plasters) would
would not do. The straw bale house is so
healthy and natural because earth/clay
is moisture balancing, odour absorbing
and temperature stabilising (thermal
mass).
For projects with up to 100m2 wall area
we like to plaster by hand with COB, a
mixture of clay, sand and chopped straw
(in the ratio 1:2:1). For hand plastering we
use (quartz) sand with 2mm grain size.
To mix the material we recommend a
(borrowed) compulsory mixer, in free fall
mixers the material is segregated.
Alternatively, the material can first be
mixed dry on a tarpaulin, then formed
into rollers or COB balls with water, the
tarpaulin helps to turn the material. 15
minutes of mixing (manually or treading
by foot) is usually enough and makes a
wonderful, smooth homogenous mix.
If excavated soil is used, either it must
be sieved or the material is slaked (the
stones sink to the ground and can be
removed manually) or - for larger
quantities - we use a soil conditioner
("Erdaufbereiter", approx. €4.600, or
used from €1.000), which crushes the
lumps but also the stones.
Spray plaster is about 10 times faster,
but for this purpose ready mixes must
be used, because excavated clay is too
greasy, and stones could damage the
machine. The spray plaster penetrates
deeper into the straw and guarantees
even more structural adhesion.

Wer mit Stroh dämmt, verputzt auch mit
Lehm oder verwendet Lehmbauplatten
im Trockenbau, alles andere (Gipsplatten,
Tonputze) macht nicht wirklich
Sinn. Das Strohballenhaus ist so gesund
und natürlich, weil der Lehm
feuchteausgleichend, geruchsabsorbierend
und temperaturstabilisierend
(thermische Masse) ist.
Bei Projekten bis 100m2 Wandfläche
verputzen wir gerne mit der Hand mit
COB, einer Mischung aus Lehm, Sand
und Strohhäcksel (1:2:1). Für den
Handputz verwenden wir (Quarz) Sande
mit 2mm Körnung. Um das Material zu
mischen, empfiehlt sich ein
Zwangsmischer (kann ausgeborgt
werden), in Freifallmischern entmischt
sich das Material. Alternativ kann auf
einer Plane das Material zuerst trocken
vermischt, dann mit Wasser zu Walzen
oder COB-Bällen geformt werden, die
Plane hilft beim Wenden des Materials.
Wird der Bodenaushub verwendet, muss
entweder gesiebt werden oder das
Material wird eingesumpft (die Steine
sinken zu Boden und können manuell
entfernt werden) oder wir verwenden -
für größere Mengen - einen Erdaufbereiter
(ab ca. € 4.600, gebraucht ab
€ 1.000), der die Brocken aber auch die
Steine zerkleinert.
Der Spritzputz hat den Vorteil, dass er
etwa 10mal so schnell ist, dazu müssen
Fertigmischungen verwendet werden,
weil zu fette Lehme (oder Steine) die
Maschine beschädigen könnten. Zudem
dringt der Spritzputz tiefer und damit
kraftschlüssiger ins Stroh ein.
FLASCHENWAND/BOTTLE WALL
COB können wir auch als Mörtel
für Flaschenwände verwenden,
mit mehr Strohanteilen für eine
bessere Dämmung. Eine Flasche
und ein Marmeladenglas werden
mit Tapes verbunden und mit
dem Mörtel aufgemauert, der COB
verhindert Kondensation im Glas.

are joined with tape and bricked
up with mortar, the COB absorbs
any condensation in the glass.
