12th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition July 5 - 9, 2023 Wernigerode, Germany International variety meets a historical backdrop Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town. The historical town hall and the timber-framed city center give the festival its unique setting. At the same time dedicated inhabitants, who act as individual choir assistants, ensure a familiar atmosphere. This competition, named after Johannes Brahms, puts a musical focus on this German composer and the German romantics of the 19th century. Numerous advanced trainings offer interested choirs outstanding possibilities of mutual learning and professional training e.g. with evaluation performances and individual coaching. Due to its familiar character, the beautiful backdrop and the international variety this festival has established itself as one of INTERKULTUR’s most popular events.

Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town.

Künstlerischer Leiter / Artistic Director<br />

Peter Habermann war Mitglied des Dresdner<br />

Kreuzchores, studierte in den Fächern Gesang<br />

und Gesangspädagogik und war 40 Jahre<br />

als Gesangslehrer am heutigen L<strong>and</strong>esgymnasium<br />

für Musik in Wernigerode tätig.<br />

Er war Leiter mehrerer Chöre, so leitete er<br />

den Kinderchor am L<strong>and</strong>esmusikgymnasium<br />

Wernigerode sowie über 20 Jahre den Rundfunk-Jugendchor<br />

Wernigerode, mit dem er<br />

erste Preise und Auszeichnungen bei nationalen<br />

und internationalen Chorwettbewerben<br />

erringen konnte. Aus ehemaligen Mitgliedern<br />

dieses Chores gründete er den Kammerchor<br />

Wernigerode, der unter <strong>and</strong>erem durch<br />

den Sieg beim Gr<strong>and</strong> Prix der Chöre im ZDF<br />

bundesweiten Bekanntheitsgrad erreichte.<br />

Mit der Leitung des Männerchores Drübeck<br />

zeigte er seine Verbundenheit auch mit dem<br />

Laienmusizieren.<br />

Mehrere CD-Einspielungen seiner Ensembles<br />

und Konzertreisen rundeten, neben<br />

weiteren Aufgaben als Juror verschiedener<br />

Gesangs- und Chorwettbewerbe, als Dozent,<br />

Arrangeur und Sprecher seine bis 2021 vielfältige<br />

Tätigkeit ab. Seit fünf Jahren ist er<br />

Künstlerischer Leiter des <strong>International</strong>en <strong>Johannes</strong>-<strong>Brahms</strong>-Chorfestivals<br />

& Wettbewerb<br />

in Wernigerode.<br />

Peter Habermann was a member of the<br />

Dresdner Kreuzchor, studied singing <strong>and</strong><br />

vocal pedagogy <strong>and</strong> worked for 40 years as<br />

a singing teacher at today's L<strong>and</strong>esgymnasium<br />

für Musik in Wernigerode.<br />

He was the director of several choirs, including<br />

the children's choir at the L<strong>and</strong>esmusikgymnasium<br />

Wernigerode <strong>and</strong><br />

the Rundfunk-Jugendchor Wernigerode<br />

for over 20 years, with which he won first<br />

prizes <strong>and</strong> awards at national <strong>and</strong> international<br />

choir competitions. He formed the<br />

Kammerchor Wernigerode from former<br />

members of this choir, which achieved<br />

nationwide fame, for example, by winning<br />

the Gr<strong>and</strong> Prix of <strong>Choir</strong>s on German national<br />

TV (ZDF). By directing the Männerchor<br />

Drübeck, he also demonstrated his affinity<br />

with amateur music-making.<br />

Several CD recordings of his ensembles<br />

<strong>and</strong> concert tours completed his varied<br />

activities until 2021, in addition to other<br />

tasks as a juror of various singing <strong>and</strong><br />

choir competitions, as a lecturer, arranger<br />

<strong>and</strong> speaker. Since five years he is Artistic<br />

Director of the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Johannes</strong><br />

<strong>Brahms</strong> <strong>Choir</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> & <strong>Competition</strong> in<br />

Wernigerode.
