12th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition July 5 - 9, 2023 Wernigerode, Germany International variety meets a historical backdrop Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town. The historical town hall and the timber-framed city center give the festival its unique setting. At the same time dedicated inhabitants, who act as individual choir assistants, ensure a familiar atmosphere. This competition, named after Johannes Brahms, puts a musical focus on this German composer and the German romantics of the 19th century. Numerous advanced trainings offer interested choirs outstanding possibilities of mutual learning and professional training e.g. with evaluation performances and individual coaching. Due to its familiar character, the beautiful backdrop and the international variety this festival has established itself as one of INTERKULTUR’s most popular events.

Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. Prof. Dr. Friedrich Krell war Wegbereiter der Chorkunst in der ehemaligen DDR und<br />
später des wiedervereinten Deutschl<strong>and</strong>s. 1988 gründete er die Wernigeroder Singakademie<br />
und 1991 wurde er zum Leiter des L<strong>and</strong>esgymnasiums für Musik Wernigerode<br />
berufen, das aus den von ihm 1963 eingerichteten Spezialklassen für Musikerziehung<br />
hervorgegangen ist. 1994 half er, den L<strong>and</strong>esjugendchor Sachsen-Anhalt aufzubauen.<br />
Er war als geschätzter Berater, Dozent bei Chorleiterlehrgängen und als internationaler<br />
Juror tätig. Prof. Dr. Friedrich Krell war Gründer und 45 Jahre lang Künstlerischer<br />
Leiter des international bekannten Rundfunk-Jugendchors Wernigerode, mit dem er in<br />
den 1990er Jahren erfolgreich an einem der neu gegründeten Chorwettbewerbe von IN-<br />
TERKULTUR in Riva del Garda teilnahm. Auch in den folgenden Jahren begeisterte der<br />
Chor, dann unter Leitung von Peter Habermann, bei weiteren Wettbewerben und bei der<br />
1. Chorolympiade, den heutigen World <strong>Choir</strong> Games, in Linz.<br />
Auf die Initiative Friedrich Krells geht es zurück, dass der frühere Oberbürgermeister<br />
von Wernigerode, Ludwig Hofmann, und INTERKULTUR-Präsident Günter Titsch in den<br />
1990er Jahren zusammenkamen, um einen regelmäßig stattfindenden Chorwettbewerb<br />
von internationalem Rang in der Bunten Stadt am Harz zu etablieren: Das <strong>International</strong>e<br />
<strong>Johannes</strong>-<strong>Brahms</strong>-Chorfestival & Wettbewerb in Wernigerode. Für seine Verdienste um<br />
die Chorbewegung wurde Prof. Dr. Friedrich Krell 2003 mit dem Verdienstkreuz am B<strong>and</strong>e<br />
des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschl<strong>and</strong> geehrt. Sein Andenken wird<br />
insbesondere beim <strong>International</strong>en <strong>Johannes</strong>-<strong>Brahms</strong>-Chorfestivals & Wettbewerb in<br />
Wernigerode bewahrt bleiben.
