12th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition July 5 - 9, 2023 Wernigerode, Germany International variety meets a historical backdrop Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town. The historical town hall and the timber-framed city center give the festival its unique setting. At the same time dedicated inhabitants, who act as individual choir assistants, ensure a familiar atmosphere. This competition, named after Johannes Brahms, puts a musical focus on this German composer and the German romantics of the 19th century. Numerous advanced trainings offer interested choirs outstanding possibilities of mutual learning and professional training e.g. with evaluation performances and individual coaching. Due to its familiar character, the beautiful backdrop and the international variety this festival has established itself as one of INTERKULTUR’s most popular events.

International variety meets a historical backdrop

Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town.

The historical town hall and the timber-framed city center give the festival its unique setting. At the same time dedicated inhabitants, who act as individual choir assistants, ensure a familiar atmosphere.

This competition, named after Johannes Brahms, puts a musical focus on this German composer and the German romantics of the 19th century.

Numerous advanced trainings offer interested choirs outstanding possibilities of mutual learning and professional training e.g. with evaluation performances and individual coaching.

Due to its familiar character, the beautiful backdrop and the international variety this festival has established itself as one of INTERKULTUR’s most popular events.

Mathew Wright ist seit mehr als 20 Jahren<br />

im Bildungssektor tätig und hat in verschiedenen<br />

Funktionen an Schulen gearbeitet,<br />

zuletzt als Regional Director of Education<br />

für einen Trust, der 27 Schulen in ganz Engl<strong>and</strong><br />

betreute. Er hat als Advisory Teacher<br />

und Advanced Skilled Teacher gearbeitet<br />

und auf nationaler Ebene Unterstützung und<br />

Schulungen für die Primar-, Sekundar-, FEund<br />

HE-Ebene angeboten und Ressourcen<br />

für Regierungspublikationen bereitgestellt.<br />

Er ist Gründer und Künstlerischer Leiter<br />

des Barnsley Youth <strong>Choir</strong> und Gründer der<br />

Barnsley Singers (ein Community-Chor für<br />

Erwachsene) und hat den Chor zu einer international<br />

preisgekrönten und anerkannten<br />

Organisation entwickelt. Als Mitglied<br />

in den internationalen Jurys hat Mat bei<br />

einigen der wichtigsten Wettbewerbe der<br />

Welt mitgewirkt, darunter die World <strong>Choir</strong><br />

Games. Er arbeitet eng mit herausragenden<br />

Organisationen wie der Kodaly-Schule<br />

(Ungarn), der Adolf-Fredriks-Musikschule<br />

(Schweden) und der Universität von Pretoria<br />

(Südafrika) zusammen, die alle nach<br />

Barnsley gereist sind, um mit dem BYC<br />

zu arbeiten, und ist weltweit ein gefragter<br />

Chordozent und Leiter von Workshops für<br />

Chöre. Im Jahr 2019 wurde Mat zum Vertreter<br />

Großbritanniens im World <strong>Choir</strong> Council<br />

ernannt und im Januar 2020 wurde er von<br />

der Königin für seine Verdienste um junge<br />

Menschen zum Mitglied des "Order of the<br />

British Empire" (MBE) ernannt. Im Jahr<br />

2022 wurde er außerdem zum "Freeman of<br />

Barnsley" ernannt, in Anerkennung seiner<br />

Arbeit für die Gesellschaft.<br />

Mathew Wright has worked in the education<br />

sector for over 20 years working in schools<br />

in a variety of roles, most recently as a Regional<br />

Director of Education for a trust overseeing<br />

27 schools across Engl<strong>and</strong>. He has<br />

worked as an Advisory Teacher <strong>and</strong> as an<br />

Advanced Skilled Teacher, delivering support<br />

<strong>and</strong> training nationally at Primary, Secondary,<br />

FE <strong>and</strong> HE levels, <strong>and</strong> has provided<br />

resources for government publications. He<br />

is the founder <strong>and</strong> Artistic Director of Barnsley<br />

Youth <strong>Choir</strong>, <strong>and</strong> founder of Barnsley<br />

Singers (an adult community choir) <strong>and</strong> has<br />

developed the choir into an internationally<br />

award-winning <strong>and</strong> recognised organisation.<br />

As a member of the international jury,<br />

Mat has worked in some of the most important<br />

competitions in the world including the<br />

World <strong>Choir</strong> Games. He works closely with<br />

exceptional organisations including the Kodaly<br />

School (Hungary), The Adolf Fredriks<br />

Music School (Sweden) <strong>and</strong> the University<br />

of Pretoria (South Africa), all of whom have<br />

travelled to Barnsley to work with BYC <strong>and</strong><br />

is in dem<strong>and</strong> as a choral clinician <strong>and</strong> workshop<br />

leader throughout the world.<br />

In 2019 Mat was appointed as a representative<br />

for Great Britain on the World <strong>Choir</strong><br />

Council <strong>and</strong> in January 2020 was appointed<br />

a Member of the “Order of the British Empire”<br />

(MBE) for his services to young people<br />

by the Queen. In 2022 he was also made a<br />

“Freeman of Barnsley” in recognition for his<br />

work in the community.
