12th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition July 5 - 9, 2023 Wernigerode, Germany International variety meets a historical backdrop Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town. The historical town hall and the timber-framed city center give the festival its unique setting. At the same time dedicated inhabitants, who act as individual choir assistants, ensure a familiar atmosphere. This competition, named after Johannes Brahms, puts a musical focus on this German composer and the German romantics of the 19th century. Numerous advanced trainings offer interested choirs outstanding possibilities of mutual learning and professional training e.g. with evaluation performances and individual coaching. Due to its familiar character, the beautiful backdrop and the international variety this festival has established itself as one of INTERKULTUR’s most popular events.

Since 1999 the International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition is a crowd puller for choirs and music ensembles from all over the world. The colorful city in the Harz mountain range attracts visitors with its unique charm of medieval architecture and moreover with its musical characteristics: Three renowned German choirs come from this small town.

Axel Pfeiffer studierte Musikwissenschaften<br />
und Instrumentalpädagogik mit<br />
Hauptfach Klavier in Gießen und Mainz<br />
sowie Chorleitung an der Akademie für<br />
Tonkunst in Darmstadt. Er erreicht als<br />
Chorleiter mit seinen Chören bei nationalen<br />
und internationalen Chorwettbewerben<br />
zahlreiche erste Preise. Seit dem Jahr<br />
2008 war er organisatorischer Leiter und<br />
einer von zwei Dirigenten des L<strong>and</strong>esjugendchores<br />
Hessen, seit April 2023 leitet<br />
er den Chor alleine.<br />
Axel Pfeiffer war Bundeschorleiter der<br />
Hessischen Chorjugend und Vorsitzender<br />
des Bundesmusikausschuss des Hessischen<br />
Sängerbundes. Er unterrichtete<br />
Tonsatz, chorische Stimmbildung und<br />
Einstudierung an der Frankfurter Chorleiterschule<br />
sowie als Leiter der Marburger<br />
Chorleiterschule des Hessischen Sängerbundes<br />
die Fächer Dirigieren, Einstudierung<br />
und chorische Stimmbildung. Er<br />
leitet Seminare und Fortbildungsveranstaltungen<br />
und wird regelmäßig als Kritiker<br />
und Juror verpflichtet.<br />
2009 gründete Axel Pfeiffer den Chor<br />
Cantamus Gießen. Mit diesem Ensemble<br />
konnte er seitdem zahlreiche erste Preise<br />
bei Wettbewerben erzielen, so unter <strong>and</strong>erem<br />
den Gewinn des Hessischen Chorwettbewerbs<br />
2013, 2017 und 2022 oder die<br />
Tageshöchstwertung aller teilnehmenden<br />
Chöre beim nationalen Chorwettbewerb<br />
im Rahmen des Harmonie <strong>Festival</strong>s 2017.<br />
Axel Pfeiffer studied musicology <strong>and</strong> instrumental<br />
pedagogy with a major in piano<br />
in Gießen <strong>and</strong> Mainz, as well as choral<br />
conducting at the Akademie für Tonkunst<br />
in Darmstadt. As a choral conductor, he<br />
has won numerous first prizes with his<br />
choirs at national <strong>and</strong> international choral<br />
competitions. Since 2008 he has been<br />
the organisational director <strong>and</strong> one of two<br />
conductors of the L<strong>and</strong>esjugendchor Hessen,<br />
since April 2023 he has been conducting<br />
the choir alone.<br />
Axel Pfeiffer was national choir director<br />
of the Hessian Youth <strong>Choir</strong> Association<br />
<strong>and</strong> chairman of the Federal Music Committee<br />
of the Hessian Singers' Association.<br />
He taught music theory, choral voice<br />
training <strong>and</strong> rehearsing techniques at the<br />
Frankfurt Choral Conducting School <strong>and</strong>,<br />
as head of the Marburg Choral Conducting<br />
School of the Hessian Singers' Association,<br />
courses on conducting, rehearsal <strong>and</strong><br />
choral voice training. He teaches in seminars<br />
<strong>and</strong> advanced training courses <strong>and</strong> is<br />
regularly engaged as a critic <strong>and</strong> juror.<br />
In 2009 Axel Pfeiffer founded the choir<br />
Cantamus Gießen. Since then, he has won<br />
numerous first prizes with this ensemble<br />
at competitions, including winning the<br />
Hessian <strong>Choir</strong> <strong>Competition</strong> in 2013, 2017<br />
<strong>and</strong> 2022 <strong>and</strong> the highest score of the day<br />
of all participating choirs at the national<br />
choir competition at the Harmonie <strong>Festival</strong><br />
in 2017.
