Intermediate Chinese I<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Builds upon the fundamentals of Chinese grammar<br />

studied in CHIN 101 and 102 and introduces students to<br />

translation. Intensive practice in oral skills and the<br />

development of an increased command of reading and<br />

writing Chinese characters. Introduction of 450 new<br />

words into the speaking and listening vocabulary and 200<br />

new characters into the reading and writing vocabulary.<br />

Fall semester only.<br />

Prerequisite: CHIN 102 or equivalent, or consent of<br />

instructor.<br />

Intermediate Chinese II<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Strengthens and improves Chinese language skills:<br />

speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This course<br />

emphasizes grammar, idiomatic expression, writing short<br />

paragraphs in Chinese, and translation skills. Introduction<br />

of 450 new words into the speaking and listening<br />

vocabulary and 250 characters into the reading and<br />

writing vocabulary.<br />

Spring semester only.<br />

This course is for American Chinese learners who have<br />

reached an advanced level of Chinese language in the<br />

U.S. and are now learning Chinese in China. The content<br />

is based on the reality of the contemporary Chinese<br />

society and has a close relationship with foreign students’<br />

daily life and studies in China.<br />

Taught in Beijing, China.<br />

Prerequisite: CHIN 204 or equivalent, or consent of<br />

instructor.<br />

Advanced Chinese II<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This course is for American Chinese learners who have<br />

reached an advanced level of Chinese language in the<br />

U.S. and are now learning Chinese in China. The content<br />

is based on the reality of the contemporary Chinese<br />

Modern Chinese Literature<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This course is a survey of modern Chinese literature from<br />

1918 to the present. It will focus on the fiction, poetry,<br />

and essays during the three periods (1918-1949, 1949-<br />

1976, since 1976) in the 20th century.<br />
