Shock and Vibration Engineering<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Design of single and multidegree of freedom elastic<br />

mechanical systems, transient vibration analysis, shock<br />

spectra, matrix methods, numerical analysis techniques,<br />

discrete and continuous systems, and random vibrations.<br />

Lecture, 3 hours.<br />

Prerequisites: CIVL 200, MATH 245, and Senior standing<br />

in Mechanical Engineering.<br />

MECH 550<br />

Computer-Aided Manufacturing<br />

2 Semester Hours<br />

A comprehensive study of manufacturing with a focus on<br />

automation, flexible automation, group technology,<br />

process planning, and design for manufacturability.<br />

Principles and applications of computer numerical control<br />

(CNC) and NC programming, rapid prototyping, robotics,<br />

and investment casting are introduced through lecture<br />

and laboratory work.<br />

Lecture, 2 hours.<br />

Prerequisites: CIVL 200 and MECH 312.<br />

Corequisite: MECH 441.<br />

MECH 558<br />

Propulsion Systems<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Fluid mechanical and thermodynamic analysis and design<br />

of propulsion systems and components: gas turbines,<br />

turbojets, turbofans, ramjets, and rockets. Computeraided<br />

analysis utilized.<br />

Lecture, 3 hours.<br />

MECH 560<br />

Turbomachinery<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Analysis and design of compressors, pumps, and fans.<br />

Lecture, 3 hours.<br />

Prerequisite: Senior standing in Mechanical Engineering.<br />

MECH 571<br />

Design of Fluid-Thermal Systems<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

The disciplines of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and<br />

heat transfer are reviewed and their principles applied to<br />

the design, selection, and analysis of pumps, pipes, heat<br />

exchangers, and power plants. Other topics include<br />

availability analysis, optimization, and design projects.<br />

Lecture, 3 hours.<br />

Prerequisite: Senior/Graduate standing.<br />

Senior Research<br />

1-3 Semester Hours<br />

Research project consisting of experimental and/or<br />

theoretical studies under the direction of a faculty advisor.<br />

Prerequisites: Senior standing and approval of<br />

Department Chairperson.<br />

MECH 596<br />

Design Project<br />

1-3 Semester Hours<br />

Competition: Formal registration and active participation<br />

in any of the Mechanical Engineering team design<br />

competitions including: Formula SAE, SAE Mini-Baja,<br />

ASME Human-Powered Vehicle, SAE Aero Design, or<br />

other competitions approved by the Department.<br />
