Music Theory and Form II<br />

Continuation of MUSC 121, introducing cadences, nonchord<br />

tones, 7th chords, chromatic harmony and voice<br />

leading (secondary chords), and various types of<br />

modulation. Also includes an introduction to formal<br />

analysis through the study of period and other phrase<br />

structures.<br />

Sight Singing I<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Study of notation, keys, scales, rhythm; recognition of<br />

intervals; development of the ability to sight-read vocally<br />

from the score and to take melodic dictation.<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Continuation of MUSC 131.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSC 131.<br />

MUSC 133<br />

Aural Skills I<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Developing of the aural skills of sight singing, audiation,<br />

and pitch discrimination leading to the ability to take<br />

musical dictation from simple to intermediate levels<br />

involving melody, rhythm and meter, chords in root<br />

position, and cadential harmony. Includes Computer<br />

Assisted Instruction (CAI).<br />

Corequisite: MUSC 121.<br />

MUSC 134<br />

Aural Skills II<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Continuation of MUSC 133, further developing the ability<br />

to take musical dictation from intermediate to advanced<br />

levels involving tonal, modal, and atonal melody, rhythm<br />

and meter, all chord types including inversions and<br />

functional harmonic progression. Continuation of CAI.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSC 133.<br />

Corequisite: MUSC 122.<br />

MUSC 135<br />

Functional Piano I<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Development of pragmatic keyboard reading skills.<br />

Music majors/minors only.<br />

Functional Piano II<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Continuation of MUSC 135.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSC 135 or consent of instructor.<br />

Beginning Piano Class<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Development of pragmatic keyboard reading skills.<br />

MUSC 176<br />

Intermediate Piano Class<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Application of fundamental keyboard reading skills<br />

through sight reading, ensemble work, harmonizing, and<br />

improvising. Development of interpretive skills through<br />

the use of repertoire from different eras.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSC 175 or consent of instructor.<br />

MUSC 177<br />

Advanced Piano Class<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Application of interpretive skills using more complex<br />

repertoire. Fundamentals of tonal music theory are<br />

addressed along with sight reading and improvising.<br />

Individual projects may be assigned.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSC 176 or consent of instructor.<br />

MUSC 178<br />

Beginning Voice Class<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

Group instruction in singing. The basics of breathing, tone<br />

production, diction and articulation, song preparation,<br />

and performance.<br />

MUSC 179<br />

Beginning Guitar Class<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

The study of the classical guitar: learning to read music,<br />

learning to use the hands efficiently, gaining an<br />

understanding of the structures of music in order to<br />

develop an interpretive style.
