If the plant were to be taken down to start building a new<br />

structure, the company would lose its capability to build<br />

small truck chassis and suspension. <strong>The</strong> plan, therefore,<br />

was to continue production while building the new plant.<br />

<strong>The</strong> process of moving production equipment during<br />

construction was as complicated as a puzzle. Since the<br />

complicated scenario had been laid out already, the<br />

supervisor was reluctant to build the component for <strong>Prius</strong>.<br />

Restoring Honsha Plant<br />

<strong>The</strong> engineers on duty from the Power Train & Chassis<br />

Components Production Engineering Division and the<br />

Machine & Tools Engineering Division met again. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

looked to see which plants were open to build components.<br />

Kinuura (Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture) and Tahara Plants<br />

were mentioned, but both were more than one hour away<br />

from the head office.<br />

"We stopped building new components at the Honsha<br />

Plant a long time ago. In the past, many functional parts<br />

such as Landcruiser engines were produced here, but the plant<br />

today only makes simple parts such as differentials and<br />

frames. Crucial functional parts are all built at Kamigo,<br />

Tahara, or Kinuura. Is this right for our plant?" It was Chief<br />
