Engine production was assigned to Kamigo Plant. This<br />

plant has a mid-size, medium-scale production line that<br />

is capable of monthly cross-manufacturing 1,000 to 3,000<br />

units of several types of engines, such as the V12 engine for<br />

Toyota's top luxury car, the Century. This line was naturally<br />

selected for manufacturing 1,000 to 2,000 engines for the<br />

<strong>Prius</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cylinder block was made on an exclusive line, but<br />

the cam, crankshaft, and cylinder head were made on a<br />

general production line. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Prius</strong> engine was to be<br />

assembled on the same line as the V12 engine.<br />

Nightmare after nightmare<br />

New Year's of 1997 was the beginning of a series of<br />

troubles for Toyota. Since December of the previous<br />

year President Masaru Tomita of Toyota Peru, the local sales<br />

arm, was still being held hostage with many others at the<br />

Japanese Embassy in Peru. Consequently while the hostage<br />

situation remained unresolved (the hostages were released near<br />

the end of April), affiliated departments had no time to enjoy<br />

their New Year holidays.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n, on the evening of January 24 th , Toyota's<br />

corporate helicopter that left Higashifuji Technical Center<br />
