Toyota further contacted suppliers of other auto makers,<br />

independent parts suppliers, and non-auto metal processing<br />

companies. At the same time, another group was dispatched<br />

to Aisin's Handa Plant (Handa City, Aichi Prefecture) to<br />

quickly set up an emergency line using general machinery,<br />

and to refurbish the special machinery that had been<br />

partially damaged by the fire. Toyota unsparingly injected<br />

manpower and supported Aisin's effort to restore 80% of<br />

the necessary production of P-valves in just a few weeks.<br />

Quickly after the fire, Toyota took note of every plant<br />

that might be capable of manufacturing the P-valves.<br />

Frontline base teams were established in Machine & Tools<br />

Engineering Division and the Machines Division of Teiho<br />

Plant. For the first several days, the teams worked on preparing<br />

to produce P-valves. When the P-valve supply was re-<br />

established, the teams took charge of keeping track of the<br />

production volume every day.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Power Train & Chassis Components Production<br />

Engineering Division that builds prototype parts units also<br />

owns many general-use manufacturing machinery. This<br />

department was mobilized to use all its machinery for<br />

producing P-valves, and the production of prototypes was<br />

temporarily stopped.<br />

temporarily, test cars and test units could not be<br />
