Grant Activity: Conduct research, teach<br />

undergraduate or graduate courses, or carry<br />

out a combination of teaching and research<br />

activities. Additional activities may include<br />

conducting seminars for advanced students or<br />

faculty, consulting on curriculum, supervising<br />

theses, advising students on research and<br />

speaking to selected Saudi audiences of relevant<br />

background.<br />

Specialization(s): Priority fields include, but<br />

are not limited to, American literature, American<br />

history, American studies, archaeology,<br />

business administration, economics, educational<br />

administration and TESOL and English language<br />

curriculum development.<br />

Language: English is the language of<br />

instruction in undergraduate courses in sciences<br />

and technology and in most subjects at the<br />

graduate level. Arabic is generally required<br />

for research, according to the demands of the<br />

project.<br />

Location(s): Affiliation to be determined, but<br />

Length of Grant: 3 months to 10 months<br />

Comments: All requests for academic affiliation<br />

must be presented formally by diplomatic note<br />

Summary: Up to four research awards.<br />

Program Overview: Most researchers are<br />

affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and<br />

pursue research independently. However,<br />

affiliation is not assured in any given year.<br />

Candidates must be prepared to be very flexible.<br />

Researchers in agricultural sciences may be<br />

affiliated with the International Center for<br />

Agriculture in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), an<br />

international organization near Aleppo. Names<br />

and addresses of contact persons in Syria are<br />

available from CIES, or potential applicants<br />

may contact Ms. Sahar Hassibi, exchanges<br />

specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus,<br />

at hassibiSH@state.gov. The Embassy cannot<br />

advise applicants on proposals or seek affiliation<br />

with specific Syrian institutions.<br />

Grant Activity: Conduct research in any area<br />

of interest. Researchers may be expected to give<br />

occasional lectures and presentations at universities<br />

or other public or private institutions, including the<br />

American Center.<br />

Language: Arabic proficiency required, as<br />

necessary for project.<br />

Length of Grant: 3 months to 9 months<br />

Starting Date: Flexible during 2010-11 academic<br />

year<br />

Comments: Previous researchers have worked<br />

with the Syrian Ministry of Culture, Directorate of<br />

Antiquities, Assad National Library, French Institute<br />

(IFPO), International Center for Agricultural<br />

Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Aleppo, and<br />

at Syrian private and public universities through<br />

the Ministry of Higher Education. Applicants<br />

should communicate with a prospective host<br />

institution or colleague prior to submission of an<br />

application. However, a letter of invitation from a<br />

local institution is not required, except in the case<br />

of ICARDA. Please note that only the Ministry<br />

of Culture, Ministry of Higher Education and<br />

ICARDA have the authority to affiliate researchers<br />

and to sponsor foreigners for residency permits. In<br />

recent years, this affiliation has not been granted to<br />

Fulbright Scholars. Affiliation facilitates a residency<br />

permit, however, a scholar can conduct research<br />

without affiliation, and a scholar may remain in<br />

Syria for 3-9 months in tourist status.<br />

Summary: Up to five lecturing or lecturing/<br />

research awards. See also research opportunities<br />

under the Middle East and North Africa Regional<br />

Research Program. An M.A. is sufficient if teaching<br />

English as a foreign language. A Ph.D. is required<br />

for all other awards. Retired professors with a<br />

Ph.D. and considerable teaching experience are<br />

also welcome to apply. Class size and hours may<br />

vary from 20 to 60 students and from 6 to 15 hours<br />

per week. The teaching load varies according to<br />

seniority and university, but all professors are<br />

required to teach at least 2 courses per semester.<br />

Award duration is included in each description.<br />

Program Overview: Academic year is from<br />

mid-September 2010 through mid-July 2011, and<br />

includes three terms: October through December<br />

2010, January through March 2011 and April<br />

through June 2011, with two 2-week breaks in<br />

winter and spring. Lecturing is in Arabic or French,<br />

with the exception of American studies, business<br />

and engineering post grad awards, where English<br />

is employed. Obtain additional information on<br />

each award position and names and addresses of<br />

institutional representatives in Tunisia from CIES.<br />

A one or two- page French or Arabic summary of<br />

project is required, except for American studies<br />
