The public Danish primary and secondary
schools will usually accept children of Fulbright
grantees free of charge. The language of
instruction is Danish and the school year begins
in August. Depending on the size, level and
location of the school, the teachers will usually
have some English ability. A few Danish schools
have international sections where English is the
language of instruction. There are a number of
international schools in Denmark where English
is the language of instruction. The majority of
these are in and around Copenhagen. These
schools charge fees. Danish institutions
hosting U.S. scholars are willing to investigate
schooling possibilities for dependent children.
The Danish-American Fulbright Commission
has also assisted with this. For more information
on the educational system, visit the Ministry
of Education’s English Web site at www.uvm.
dk/eng and Cirius’ English Web site at www.
ciriusonline.dk/eng.
See page 135. Book allowance of $1,500.
Finland n.a. The monthly maintenance is 2,700 euro. Travel allowance of $1,800. The Finnish school system is considered one
of the best in the world. Finnish schools are
free, although some special schools, such
as international schools, may charge tuition.
Universities do not currently charge tuition.
Instruction in English is available in Helsinki
at kindergartens, elementary and secondary
schools, as well as at university level.
Health care from a general practitioner and a number of specialists is
free in Denmark. Dental care is subsidized.
Housing is arranged and paid for by the host institution. Applicants
should communicate their housing needs to the host institution
so that appropriate housing can be arranged for them. Housing
benefits are not available for grantees in the Mid-Career Professional
Development program, who arrange and pay for their own housing.
Finnish medical care is of high quality and low cost. At some
institutions Fulbright Scholars have access to the university health
care services provided for faculty and staff.
