Grant stipends and benefits for 2010-2011 vary by country or regional program and type of award. The standard
overview structure outlined below is utilized for country and regional programs in many world areas. In others,
binational Fulbright Commissions have established grant benefits for their individual country programs.
Consult the specific benefits description provided for the individual country, regional or special program
in the table beginning on page 1357
Benefits for special awards that do not follow the formulas identified for a country program (for example,
travel-only awards, international education administrators programs) are indicated in the column “Other Benefits
or Special Awards.”
Funding levels: The number of grants available under the Fulbright Scholar Program is subject to the availability
of federally appropriated funds. The United States Department of State reserves the right to alter, without notice,
the participating countries, the number of awards, the terms of agreement and allowances for Fulbright awards.
While most Fulbright grants provide the benefits listed below (stipend, monthly maintenace, travel, tution assistance,
etc.), grant stipends and benefits vary from country to country. Grants awarded to countires with Fulbright
Commissions often differ from those to countries without Fulbright Commissions. Please be sure to review the section
“Variations in Countries with a Fulbright Commission” for further information.
maintenance for living in Country of assignment
A monthly maintenance allowance is provided to cover local costs of living in the country of the Fulbright grant. This
is based on estimated local costs and is determined at the time the grant is issued.
The monthly maintenance is adjusted for up to two accompanying dependents (those who spend at least 80 percent of
the grant period with the grantee abroad).
In some cases, housing or a housing allowance, a local salary or some other monetary contribution may be directly
provided by the host institution or country, which may affect the Fulbright maintenance allowance.
