expertise. Projects may focus on contemporary<br />

China or be comparative in nature. Part of the<br />

research may be done in Hong Kong or Taiwan.<br />

Additional Qualifications: Assistant professors<br />

must be 3 years beyond the receipt of their<br />

Ph.D. at the time of application. Non-academic<br />

professionals with a record of scholarly or<br />

professional publications may apply.<br />

Language: Proficiency in Mandarin if required<br />

Comments: These awards are for individuals<br />

who are not China specialists that seek to<br />

establish a focus on China in their work or to<br />

undertake research on a comparative project.<br />

Research may be undertaken without competency<br />

in Mandarin provided the project is feasible<br />

without that language capability. Grantees may<br />

spend 1 month of a 6-8 month grant or up to 3<br />

months of a 9-10 month grant in Hong Kong at<br />

facilities such as the Universities Service Center<br />

for China Research (USC) (www.usc.cuhk.<br />

edu.hk) or using research facilities in Taiwan.<br />

Applicants who wish to work at the USC or at<br />

one of the other Hong Kong research centers<br />

should contact the USC or those centers directly<br />

for assistance in setting up their visit. Applicants<br />

who wish to spend part of the grant period in<br />

Taiwan should arrange an affiliation with a<br />

Taiwan institution and secure a letter of invitation.<br />

Specialization(s): Preference will be given to<br />

applicants specializing in American history,<br />

American literature, American politics and<br />

political process, American foreign policy,<br />

American philosophy and American higher<br />

education.<br />

Additional Qualifications: Historians<br />

specializing in 18th- and 19th-century history are<br />

of particular interest. In literature, preference will<br />

be given to those who propose to teach the canon<br />

of classic American literature.<br />
