policy, host institutions are obliged to make a<br />

financial contribution towards the funding of the<br />

grants awarded to visiting Chairs. The matter of<br />

this mandatory contribution should be raised in<br />

preliminary discussions with potential hosts, prior<br />

to the issuance of a letter of invitation. A formal<br />

hosting commitment must be received by United<br />

<strong>State</strong>s-Israel Educational Foundation from an<br />

eligible institution no later than January 2010,<br />

when the Foundation will make its final decision<br />

regarding the choice of the candidate to whom the<br />

Distinguished Chair will be offered.<br />

PARTHENOPE UNIVERSITY OF NAPLES<br />

(ITALY)<br />

Category: Distinguished Lecturing/Research<br />

Grant Activity: Foster innovation through<br />

collaborative research and curriculum<br />

development. The grantee will teach an<br />

undergraduate course in environmental sciences<br />

(2 hours per week); a one-week module (jointly<br />

with faculty from the Parthenope University<br />

of Naples) for Ph.D. students on the topic<br />

of resource, environment and sustainable<br />

development (approximately 4 hours per day<br />

for a total of 5 days); and act as Ph.D. student<br />

advisor. The scholar will have an opportunity to<br />

collaborate on ongoing departmental research.<br />

Parthenope University of Naples will also<br />

assist the scholar in organizing lectures at other<br />

Italian universities and Institutions.<br />

Specialization(s): Systems ecology (also<br />

including marine and terrestrial systems), life<br />

cycle assessment, general energy analysis<br />

and ecosystem energetics, energy conversions<br />

and networks, bioenergetics, similitude in<br />

environmental and economic systems, systems<br />

modeling and uncertainty, material and energy<br />

flows in industrial ecologies, analysis and<br />

design of sustainable systems including but<br />

not limited to urban systems, or closely related<br />

areas.<br />

Additional Qualifications: Both professionals<br />

with previous collaboration with universities<br />

and academics will be considered. Experience<br />

with Ph.D. curriculum development and<br />

Ph.D. students will be considered preferential<br />

qualification.<br />

reading assignments. The grantee has access to<br />

a well-stocked library for research. Other duties<br />

Grant Activity: Teach a class for Ph.D. students<br />

in the first semester titled “Complexity in the<br />

Environment: Hydrodynamics and Carbon<br />

Transport” (2 hours per week for 4 weeks), with<br />

an expected class size of 10-15 students, and<br />

a class for Ph.D. students titled “Lagrangian<br />

Models for Air Pollution” (2 hours per week<br />

for 6 weeks), with an expected class size of 10<br />

students. Both courses will use materials based<br />

on journal articles and other similar publications.<br />

The grantee will offer one or two seminars<br />

in area of specialization and advise graduate<br />

and Ph.D. students. The Distinguished Chair<br />

will have an opportunity to collaborate with<br />

colleagues on current research exploring the<br />

impact of climate and anthropogenic landscape<br />

Grant Activity: Candidates are expected<br />

to devote most of their time to writing (and<br />

finishing within a reasonable time after the<br />

fellowship period) a book-length scholarly<br />

journal or periodical. In addition,<br />

they are also expected to give a small number<br />

of guest lectures at universities for the general<br />

public and to participate in the conferences and<br />

other scholarly activities of the Roosevelt Study<br />

Center.<br />

Comments: The Roosevelt Study Center (RSC)<br />

in Middelburg, the Netherlands, is a small<br />

research and conference center on modern<br />

American history and culture. Housed in a<br />

12th century abbey in the heart of Middelburg,<br />

in the southwestern part of the Netherlands,<br />

the center offers a library with documents on<br />

20th-century U.S. history that are unique in<br />

Europe. The RSC also serves as the venue for<br />

European and American historians of the United<br />

<strong>State</strong>s and American studies scholars. Affiliated<br />

with the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts<br />

and Sciences, the RSC has a research program<br />

focusing on aspects of U.S. political, social<br />

and cultural history, as well as on European-<br />

American relations. The award is sponsored<br />

by the Fulbright Scholar Program, the Royal<br />

Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences<br />
