Grant Activity: The applicant should create<br />
a project that may include studies, practical<br />
experience in actual operations, visits to<br />
organizations in the applicant’s field or other<br />
appropriate professional experiences. Possible<br />
affiliations include government organizations,<br />
universities, nonprofits and private businesses,<br />
among others. Applicants should find<br />
host institutions through the Internet and<br />
networking.<br />
Specialization(s): The grant is meant for<br />
professionals in all disciplines. However,<br />
proposals for medical research involving<br />
clinical training, patient care or patient contact<br />
are not eligible.<br />
Additional Qualifications: For mid-career<br />
professionals with a minimum of 5 years<br />
of experience. Emphasis is on professional<br />
qualifications and expertise. A university<br />
degree is not required.<br />
Language: English is sufficient.<br />

affiliation and include a letter of invitation.<br />
The invitation should conform to the scholar’s<br />
project, dates of visit and state facilities<br />

Comments: The aim of the grant is to allow<br />
professionals in various fields to take a<br />
sabbatical leave of 4 to 5 months from normal<br />
work duties to pursue further education or<br />
training that would enhance their professional<br />
development. Applicants should have a<br />
minimum of 5 years of professional experience<br />
and should be at a point in their careers when<br />
maximum benefit will ensue from this period of<br />
professional enrichment.<br />

Summary: The Fulbright Program in France<br />
offers 3-12 month opportunities for research<br />
scholars and lecturers in a wide range of fields.<br />
Two to five research awards of 3-6 months<br />
duration in any discipline. One award in French<br />
studies of 3-6 months duration. One award in<br />
multidisciplinary studies of 3-6 months duration.<br />
Three awards of up to 9 months duration with<br />
research institutions in the region of Aquitaine.<br />
Four awards of up to 12 months duration with<br />
research institutions in the region of Nord Pas de<br />
Calais. Two to four awards of up to 12 months<br />
duration with research institutions in the region of<br />
Alsace. Two one-semester Fulbright-Tocqueville<br />
Distinguished Chair awards (see Fulbright<br />
Distinguished Chairs Program).<br />

projects will be evaluated not only for their<br />
scholarly, artistic or professional excellence<br />
but also the potential for increased mutual<br />
understanding between France and the United<br />

teams are particularly strong: biotechnology,<br />
biomaterials, nanoscience, photonics, medical<br />
imaging, computer-assisted surgery and medical<br />
robots.<br />

Comments: The Alsace region of France is<br />
located along the Rhine river in the heart of<br />
Europe, at the border between France, Germany<br />
and Switzerland. The main cities, Strasbourg<br />
and Mulhouse, are home to four universities<br />
and seven engineering schools. Louis Pasteur<br />
University in Strasbourg is one of the leading<br />
French universities in the sciences with almost<br />
17,000 students and 78 research laboratories<br />
where approximately 1,300 students are<br />
currently preparing Ph.D.s. The university<br />
hospitals, research institutions and laboratories<br />
in Alsace are at the forefront of the development<br />
and use of new technologies in the medical<br />
