Number of Awards: Approximately 3<br />

Category: Lecturing/Research<br />

Grant Activity: The research and lecturing<br />

components of the grant should be equal. The<br />

applicant must offer at least one substantial course<br />

to graduate students (master’s or Ph.D.) in his or<br />

her own field of expertise. This module must be an<br />

extra option for students, not just a regular course<br />

from the existing curriculum. Professors will be<br />

encouraged to lecture occasionally at other Dutch<br />

universities, take part in conferences and seminars<br />

and share their knowledge in other ways, as well.<br />

The professor should be available for students<br />

seeking advice for at least half a day each week.<br />

All practical details and information regarding<br />

reading lists, assignments, books, materials<br />

required, type of course (lecture, seminar) are<br />

agreed upon between the host and the grantee.<br />

Specialization(s): American history, law,<br />

economics, political sciences, sociology, literature,<br />

communications, music, art history, theater, or<br />

other areas of American cultural studies.<br />

Additional Qualifications: Full professor with at<br />

least 5 years of teaching experience.<br />

Language: Lecturing is in English. The Dutch<br />

language ability should be commensurate with the<br />

requirements of the research field.<br />

Location(s): Grantees can affiliate themselves with<br />

any university in the Netherlands where teaching<br />

can be done in English. Preference will be given<br />

to applicants affiliated with Faculties of Letters or<br />

Faculties of Culture<br />

Length of Grant: 4 months<br />

Starting Date: September 2010 or January/<br />

February 2011<br />

Comments: A letter of invitation from the host<br />

institution is required. The hosting universities will<br />

assist in finding appropriate housing.<br />

innovation in fields such as mathematics,<br />

geohazards, petroleum research, medieval studies,<br />

maritime studies, civil war studies and more. See<br />

Grant Activity: Participate in a team-taught<br />

survey course in American literature and culture<br />

with plenary lectures (about 150 students) and<br />

seminars (20-25 students) during the fall semester<br />

determined depending on the special interests of<br />

the grantee during both fall and spring semesters.<br />

Participate in tutorials, student advising and<br />

grading. Opportunity for research in scholar’s<br />

area of interest.<br />

literature and culture, or American studies with<br />

a specialization that includes literature. The host<br />

department is a foreign language department and<br />

creative writing is not relevant.<br />

Comments: The University of Agder is seeking<br />

applicants to complement their American studies<br />

courses. This includes lecturing and seminar<br />

(group) work at the undergraduate level for the<br />

Bachelors program and participation in some<br />

aspects of the English for Educators program<br />

(Almenn lærerutdanning), up to 8 hours per week.<br />

Courses include Introduction to American Studies,<br />

a survey course in American literature and society,<br />

and American Culture, a 4-hour per week seminar<br />

that may be composed by the instructor (typical<br />

examples “Religion in America” and “Immigration<br />

Literature”). Seminar (group) classes contain 20-25<br />

students. Students are required to acquire core texts<br />

on their own. Additional assignments are either<br />

distributed as a pdf file on the University intranet or<br />

else as a part of a printed (purchased) compendium.<br />
