North Lakes Ullswater is perhaps the most spectacular of the lakes and as we head from its gentler northern end to its spectacular origin at the foot of Helvellyn the scenery becomes ever more majestic. Thirlmere lies on the other side of that great mountain surrounded by equally steep slopes but the other lakes on our itinerary are in gentler settings, including beautiful Grasmere where the poet Wordsworth lived and worked. Excursions Included Full Day to Ambleside and Bowness. Today starts with a spectacular journey over the Kirkstone Pass to Windermere and on to Ambleside with time to explore the town before taking a cruise on Lake Windermere to Bowness (boat fare included in the tour cost). Rejoining the coach we travel via Kendal and Shap and the shores of Ullswater to Patterdale. Full Day to Cockermouth, Bassenthwaite, Keswick and Grasmere. Around the northern side of the fells to Cockermouth, then along the edge of Bassenthwaite to Keswick. After lunch we travel past Thirlmere to Grasmere for a look around Wordsworth’s village before returning to Keswick and back to Patterdale via Troutbeck. Patterdale Hotel Patterdale, Ullswater Located in Patterdale village at the head of Ullswater the hotel makes an ideal base for exploring the northern Lakes. Close by is the neighbouring village of Glenridding where the Ullswater Steamer boat offers daily sailings around the lake. Grange provides an excellent base from which to explore the Western Lake district. Excursions Included Full Day to Muncaster, Furness and Ulverston. We visit the market town of Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel and home to the ’Laurel & Hardy Museum’ and Muncaster Castle, home to an amazing octagonal library, and the World Owl Centre which cares for over 45 species of owl (entrance to Castle and Owl Centre included in tour cost). We return via the Furness Peninsula. Full Day to Coniston and Keswick. We travel to the heart of the Western Lakes via Coniston Water and Coniston village, then to the resort of Grasmere and past Thirlmere to Keswick. With ample time to explore Keswick we retrace our route arriving at Ambleside on Lake Windermere before returning to Grange.
