weekly column in the newspaper 'Yeni Safak' (New Dawn). His high regard comes from his long
career in academia. At the pinnacle of his career he was a dean at Turkey’s premier university, Marmara
University. He left this position at the height of the headscarf controversy in 2001.

Sezgin is the world’s leading authority on the history of science and technology in the Muslim
world. Sezgin established the Institute of Arabic-Islamic Sciences at the Johann Wolfgang
Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, where he is the director. The institute houses the most
comprehensive collection of texts on Islamic science in the world. Sezgin is uniquely respected by
Muslim and non-Muslim academics for his work in this field.
