Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy. He is from <strong>the</strong> predominantly Muslim Sama tribe,<br />
which garners him a significant amount of respect in dealing with <strong>the</strong> Muslim militants.<br />

General Askalani is <strong>the</strong> head of <strong>the</strong> Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG) whose mandate it is to<br />

<strong>the</strong> traditionally Muslim Tausug tribe.<br />

Rasul-Bernando is a distinguished peace and human rights advocate in Asia. She is <strong>the</strong> director of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Philippine Council on Islam and Democracy (PCID). She is <strong>the</strong> recipient of Muslim Democrat<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Year Award from <strong>the</strong> Center for <strong>the</strong> Study of Islam and Democracy for her long-term advocacy<br />
for democracy and peace in <strong>the</strong> Muslim Mindanao region. She is also a founding member of<br />
a microfinancing organization aimed at Muslim and indigenous women—<strong>the</strong> Muslim Professional<br />
and Business Women Association of <strong>the</strong> Philippines. As a founding member of <strong>the</strong> Magbassa Kita<br />
Foundation, she was responsible for raising $2 million to fund <strong>the</strong> foundation’s program for literacy<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Muslim and indigenous communities.<br />

Langputeh is a former member of <strong>the</strong> National Reconciliation Commission, which was formed to<br />
deal with <strong>the</strong> social fissure left in <strong>the</strong> aftermath of <strong>the</strong> South Thailand insurgency. He is currently<br />
an academic at <strong>the</strong> Thai Center for Muslim and Democratic Development.<br />

Sabur is <strong>the</strong> secretary general and co-founder of <strong>the</strong> Asian Resource Foundation and <strong>the</strong> Asian<br />

Kanapatsky is <strong>the</strong> deputy chairman of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Islamic</strong> Association of Belarus. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Islamic</strong> Association<br />
is currently developing <strong>the</strong> infrastructure for Muslim communities in Belarus, building a mosque<br />
in Minsk, as well as renovating <strong>the</strong> ancient mosque in Smilovichi and <strong>the</strong> Muslim cemeteries that<br />
exist throughout <strong>the</strong> country.<br />
