The facility also stays abreast <strong>of</strong> the latest developments in die steels for both its die casting and<br />
permanent mold casting operations. At the time <strong>of</strong> the site visit, the facility was investigating the<br />
test results <strong>of</strong> Case Western’s research in die materials, an ITP <strong>Metal</strong> <strong>Casting</strong> project. The<br />
facility was analyzing whether it should incorporate the use <strong>of</strong> superior steels into its operations<br />
and whether the added cost would be justified. The facility was in the process <strong>of</strong> developing the<br />
business case to help in decision-making.<br />
Copper Foundry-1 has benefited from the efforts funded by the ITP <strong>Metal</strong> <strong>Casting</strong> portfolio.<br />
Participating on the AFS technical committees has enabled the foundry to stay abreast <strong>of</strong><br />
innovative developments in the industry. Incorporation <strong>of</strong> these R&D results has assisted Copper<br />
Foundry-1 in improving the quality <strong>of</strong> its castings and has reduced its process energy costs.<br />
2. Conclusion<br />
Copper Foundry-1 is using modeling for new, unfamiliar work. The foundry’s active<br />
participation in the AFS technical committees has kept the facility personnel abreast <strong>of</strong> all<br />
relevant research; this enables them to evaluate the suitability <strong>of</strong> the latest research into their<br />
operation on a case-by-case basis. The facility has been proactive in improving their energy<br />
efficiency and has even participated in an IAC assessment.<br />
