<strong>The</strong> <strong>Baynard</strong>s of <strong>Lackham</strong><br />

Gt. Chalfield had come to Constance from her marriage to the<br />

previous owner, Sir Henry de Percy. She became his second<br />

wife 62 sometime before 1349, in which year he settled Gt. Chalfield<br />

on her for life, repeated in 1354. She was not noble, she is<br />

described as having been the “born to no arms or lands” 63 . It has<br />

been suggested 64 that Sir Henry<br />

went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, driven to that step by 'the<br />

naughty lyf the said Constance his second wyf lyved in with<br />

the bisshoppe Wayvile 65 and with others “ Henry died at<br />

Cologne on his way to Jerusalem<br />

Constance married secondly the lord of Little Chalfield, John de<br />

Pershay / Percy (no relation) and thirdly Sir Philip FitWarin when<br />

she settled the manor on she settled the manor upon herself and<br />

Sir Philip and their heirs, with it going to her son Robert, her<br />

brother Hugh, and her other heirs if they had no children.<br />

According to the Tropenell Cartulary Robert was the bastard son<br />

of Constance by Bishop Wyville 66 . Sir Philip and Constance had two<br />

daughters the eldest of whom, Isolde, married John Rous of<br />

Imber.<br />
