<strong>The</strong> <strong>Baynard</strong>s of <strong>Lackham</strong><br />
witnessed deeds for the Bell Inn in Chippenham on two separate<br />
days, 103 it was not an Inn previously (see fn 40 )<br />
In 1459 Phillip was a juror in case brought by Thomas Tropenell<br />
against Johanna Beaushyn, and her son William, a continuation of<br />
the arguments over the inheritance of Gt. Chalfieldseen earlier.<br />
Joan Beauslyn was the aunt and heir of William Rous and she seized<br />
the manor in this year Tropenell went to court and the case was<br />
heard at Salisbury in July 1459. He won and obtained possession by<br />
assise of novel disseisin 104 . To complete the story, although no<br />
<strong>Baynard</strong>s were involved in any of it after this time, in 1466 Thomas<br />
Beverley again took the matter to court and this time was<br />
successful., but he then sold his rights in the manor to Thomas<br />
Tropenell who resumed living there 105 .<br />
<strong>The</strong> date of Philip’s death is unknown but it was certainly after 1462<br />
because in that year he witnessed deeds for the Chippenham<br />
tenement known as “Iremongers”, which his father had also done<br />
previously (See fn 79 ), in 1462.<br />
Philip and Margaret’s heir was their son Robert II who was born<br />
“before 1450” 106 , actually he may have been born long before this.<br />
A Robert <strong>Baynard</strong> witnessed a grant of land, including “the Manor of<br />
Wyk by Lacok 107 ” in 1450 by Robert Salmanto a number of people<br />
