<strong>The</strong> next Lord of the Manor was Edward (1512 – 1575), Robert IV<br />
and Anne’s son. During the early years of Edward’s holding of<br />
<strong>Lackham</strong> England was at odds with the rest of Europe, having<br />
rejected the authority of the Catholic Church. In 1539, with a<br />
serious threat of invasion by the Catholic Princes of Europe, Henry<br />
VIII called for the raising of the military tithes each Manor still<br />
owed to the Crown 209 . <strong>Lackham</strong>’s part was to provide 7 archers and<br />
8 billmen, and also have ready a horse and harness and other small<br />
arms. It is possible to gain some insight into the relative affluence<br />
of <strong>Lackham</strong> and Lacock at this time - Lacock had to muster 22<br />
