<strong>The</strong> <strong>Baynard</strong>s<br />
Philip was MP for Chippenham in 1491-92 and it was he who built the<br />
West Porch of St. Cyriac’s church in Lacock. 168<br />
Apart from his presence in the witness list in 1485 he first appears<br />
in the records in 1506, when he was bound to pay the king a<br />
recognisance of 40 marks 169 which may have been for the final<br />
settling of his inheritance of the estates and then in 1512 he was<br />
witness to a charter made between a farmer of Erlstoke and a<br />
Melksham carpenter 170 .<br />
In 1517 171 he granted a “toft 172 ” in Hilmarton to the churchwardens<br />
there 173 so that they could build a house there for the use of the<br />
hurch for an annual rent of 8d providing they kept it in repair<br />
themselves (normally building repairs were the responsibility of the<br />
landowner). Philip had reasons for his generosity; a condition of the<br />
grant was that<br />

Generally toft = a small farm, relatively closely packed together with others,<br />
making a “toft village” – it is possible that Pen, near Hilmarton is one such.<br />
However in this case it was clearly a piece of land, which lay “in the high street<br />
of Helmerton between 'le fermegrounde' on the east and the highway on the<br />
west, abutting north on the churchyard, and south on the highway” [GRO<br />
