PRESCRIPTION AND OVER-THE-COUNTER DRUGS Some prescription <strong>and</strong> over <strong>the</strong> counter drugs may adversely affect a safety-sensitive employee’s ability to perform <strong>the</strong>ir job safely. Taking prescribed medication or non-prescription drugs is not illegal, but it is important to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> potential side effects. All MDTA safety-sensitive employees should consult with <strong>the</strong>ir physician or pharmacist regarding <strong>the</strong> side effects of medications. In addition, MDTA requires safety-sensitive employees to report to <strong>the</strong>ir supervisor before performing work-related duties any medication <strong>the</strong>y are taking that carries a warning label indicating that mental functions, motor skills, or judgment may be adversely affected. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action up to <strong>and</strong> including dismissal.
