Besides over-<strong>the</strong>-counter drugs, <strong>the</strong>re are a number of o<strong>the</strong>r commodities that can affect a<br />

person’s skill level <strong>and</strong> performance. These commodities, many of which are volatile<br />

substances, are not drugs per se, but are abused. Most commonly referred to as inhalants,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se commodities can be easily found around <strong>the</strong> house or place of work since <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

common household products such as glue, gasoline, paint thinner, <strong>and</strong> cleaners, to name a<br />

few.<br />

The fumes from <strong>the</strong>se commodities are inhaled causing drowsiness, ligh<strong>the</strong>adedness,<br />

numbness, <strong>and</strong> a “rush” or “high.” The use of inhalants can sometimes lead to irritability,<br />

violence, <strong>and</strong> unpredictable behavior. The high lasts for a few minutes before it dissipates.<br />

Inhalants are very dangerous because <strong>the</strong>y attack every vital organ including <strong>the</strong> brain,<br />

lungs, liver, <strong>and</strong> kidneys. Oxygen to <strong>the</strong> brain can be cut off resulting in death, severe brain<br />

damage, or heart failure.<br />

What ingredients are commonly used in over-<strong>the</strong>-counter drugs?<br />

Alcohol is commonly used in nighttime cold formulas <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cold remedies. Caffeine is<br />

frequently used as <strong>the</strong> main active ingredient in stimulants that promise to help keep you<br />

awake. Transit employees should be careful to read all labels to find out <strong>the</strong> content of <strong>the</strong><br />

drugs <strong>the</strong>y are taking, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> possible effects of safe job performance.<br />
