3.1 General Section 3. SPTR Site Overview This overview describes the South Pole TDRSS Relay site, equipment configuration, systems configuration as well as identifies the responsibilities and functions of the site personnel participating in the South Pole TDRSS Relay System. 3.2 Description a. The South Pole TDRSS Relay (SPTR) is located at the Elevated Dorm Facility (EDF), Building 21. See figure 3-1. The system supports the relay of TCP/IP packetized user command data and user scientific experimenter data via the TDRS-F1 using S-band and K-band service. Upon arrival via TDRS SSAF service, at SPTR user IP data on the forward link is down-converted and demodulated before being placed on the LAN for transmission to user sites. Data leaving the South Pole, via TDRS SSAR service is modulated and up converted prior to transmission to WSC. See figure 1-1. b. An alternative data relay system is supported via the GOES-3 and LES-9 data links. User command data and user experiment data is transmitted via the GOES-3 satellite, located at 109 degrees West and the LES-9 satellite, located at 105 degrees West. The GOES-3 satellite is in view 5 hours each day and the LES-9, 7 hours each day. The GOES/LES facility at the South Pole is located in Building 21 and is connected to the same South Pole LAN as SPTR. Other GOES equipment (modems and router) are located in the Communications Annex inside the Communications Building under the main dome. See figure 3-2. 3.3 SPTR Ground Station Site Configuration a. Elevated Dorm Facility. The EDF houses two racks of equipment which contain a Monitor and Control System, Data Server, Uninterrupted Power Source (UPS), Cisco Routers, with a Ku-band and S-band antenna mounted on the roof. See figure 3-3. b. Local Area Network. The South Pole LAN serves as the data link between user experimenter sites and the EDF. User data transported on the LAN to the EDF for SPTR transfer via the KSAR service is stored on the South Pole 2 GigaByte hard drive file server. c.
