to compress and totally occlude the jugular veins is said to be around 4–5 pounds,<br />

compared to about 9–11 pounds <strong>for</strong> the carotid arteries, around 33 pounds <strong>for</strong> the<br />

trachea, and about 66 pounds <strong>for</strong> the vertebral arteries.<br />

As mentioned above, ligatures can be quite variable. Examples include ropes,<br />

belts, scarves, bedsheets, clothing, shoelaces, and electrical cords, although anything<br />

that can be looped around the neck could theoretically act as a ligature (Figs. 15.12<br />
